Avery Johnson is an idiot (http://www.fireavery.com/)
Just being a fan it infuriated me, I can't imagine how Kidd felt.
Is Avery still on the Spurs payroll? Only explanation I can come up with.
Maybe he should just come out of retirement and play, because if you can't trust a HoF PG and one of the greatest to ever play the position. You are never going to trust anybody to play PG. His excuse was wanting more shooters on the floor (he subbed him out for Stackhouse , who is sadly ironically shooting 2% worse than Kidd from the arc).
I'm betting if Dallas doesn't win it this season, Cuban will cut the cord on Avery. He has absoloutely no idea how to set up a good offense or a good inbounds play or generally put his players in a position to succeed.
The game was pretty entertaining and if Kidd had been in it probably would have went to OT.

erm, kidd is a horrific shooter. i didn't get to see the game, but i can see his stance on this subject as he would want people who can knock down a jumper. stackhouse won a game vs the clippers not too long ago and is a decent shooter. kidd would be in there to simply distribute and is better at running the offense via open-court/fast break, not really set plays. i don't see how this was a horrible move on avery's part -- blow to jason's ego? maybe, but certainly you can see how you wouldn't want kidd taking the last shot.

Kidd is still clutch, but I can't blame Avery for playing players he is more comfortable with.

stackhouse is also a horrific shooter, though. So whats the point in subbing out a horrific shooter for a less skilled horrific shooter.
And you can totally blame him for playing players he feels comfortable with, because the players he feels comfortable are absoloutely horrible at creating shots in the closing seconds. I mean absoloutely everyone who watches the mavs knows that if terry gets an iso he can only finish with his right hand and unless you give him an absoloutely open lane to the left, he will always go right. My point is Jason Kidd running around like a chicken with his head cut off not knowing any of the mavs plays and trying to get an open look for someone has a higher rate of success than any of Averys isolation plays. Besides why would you pay 20 mil for a guy to sit on the bench for the closing minutes, when one of the reasons he was acquired in the first place was to help create offense down the stretch.

Kidd may be a bad shooter, but he's actually one of the best 3-ball shooters on the team, better than Stackhouse and Dirk. I think this move had to do w/ Avery Johnson's ego and not J-Kidd's. Avery made the excuse of wanting better shooters on the floor, but yet imo Kidd is better than Stackhouse and Kidd would create more shots for his team than Stackhouse would anyway. Johnson's whole excuse was just a smokescreen because Kidd was basically the coach in New Jersey and Johnson just wanted to show he's running the show in Dallas and not Kidd. Again like someone else here had said, if you're gonna trade for the guy, pay money, use draft picks, etc...to get him, you should have him on the floor. There was a reason they brought Kidd to Dallas and i dont think it was to lose games and sit on the bench.

you're reading too far into this -- he didn't do it to show who's the boss in Dallas, sit him on the bench to take a shot at his ego, or even to lose the game. he has not been sitting on the bench for games, he sat on the bench for this particular instance. had stackhouse or one of Dallas' players made the last shot, this conversation wouldn't even be taking place. it'd be "hm, seems kind of silly to bench kidd who you just acquired but eh, oh well! avery knows his shit i guess!!" it's the same type of scenario when you'd rather have bruce bowen in for a last defensive stop as opposed to say someone like mike bibby (assume he's on spurs ok :]) you get the point, it's just being over-analyzed because they lost.

the whole point of what im trying to say is what you just brought up. Say that your hypothetical situation existed, why would you sub in Mike Bibby for defense? Generally speaking, you subbed in a worse quality player or a player not as effective in that situation. I would have Kidd pass over Stackhouse, I would have Kidd shoot over stackhouse, i would have him defend....there is nothing jason kidd isnt better than jerry stackhouse at, besides maybe picking up technical fouls.

No he isn't, stop it. Dirk is an almost 10% better 3-pt shooter than Kidd, he's competed well in the 3-pt shootout ffs, he's just having a down year because he's getting forced to shoot 3's with 1 and sometimes 2 guys draped all over him this year with Harris gone for so long and noone else to draw defenders and kick out the ball.
I think it was a stupid sub if you're gonna run a decent play, but if you're gonna iso and shoot(which they did) then of course you put Stackhouse in, since Kidd has little ability to get his own shot off. The point was they didn't want the Spurs to be able to double-team the ball off of anybody, and without Stackhouse in over Kidd they didn't. Sucks for them that Bowen just abused Terry with the defense and block, lol. ;)
