He showed he can still play last year so this might mean he's ready to walk away. I realize he's played for 17 years but in a way it's kind of almost sad since he's the last of a group of QB's I watched growing up. Still plenty of QB talent in the NFL but he was one of the last 'older' players in the league that you heard about. Thanks for the memories Brett.

I dunno about top 5, but definitely top 10. There's Montana, Marino, Unitas, Elway, Bradshaw, Namath, etc. But he's had an amazing career and definitely needed that last great season. Was first QB I ever liked and had a jersey of him since I was in middle school. But for overall toughness and games played, and records, definitely one of the greats.

Given in the era he played in he's top 5 all time imo. There's no way I'd put Bradshaw or Namath ahead of him.

i think favre deserves his own thread, not one debating the top 5 or 10 quarterbacks in league history.
i hated him so much when i was younger, but in recent years i started to appreciate the way he played and realized that any negative feelings i had towards him were out of jealousy that my team didn't have a quarterback like him.
with the amount of success he had, he could have been a giant douchebag and he never was.
it sucks that the packers will lose a first ballot hall of fame quarterback and still be favored to win the NFC north.

Favre was a great QB, prolly 6th or 7th on my list, but...THANK U LORD! I've been getting sick and tired of seeing him jerk the Packers around this past few seasons and now all a sudden, notice how he decides to retire after Randy Moss signed w/ the Patriots. Good riddance to him and John Madden slobbering all over him.
Guys ahead of him: Montana, Elway, Brady, Staubach, Unitas, Manning, Favre. Right now Favre is better than Manning, but i kno Manning will be better than him when its all said and done.

It makes me sad when players milk it out and wind up being a nuisance.

Honors and awards
* Favre has won the Associated Press's MVP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award three times, all in consecutive years (1995, 1996, and 1997; the last shared with Barry Sanders).
* In 1999, he was ranked number 82 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. In 2005, TSN published another special feature honoring the 50 Greatest Quarterbacks. With his career statistics considerably augmented, Favre was ranked number 4, behind Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana and John Elway, and just ahead of previous Packer quarterback legend Bart Starr.
* Favre was named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 2007.
* Favre has been selected to play in the Pro Bowl nine times in his career.
* Favre is a six-time All-Pro selection.
* Favre was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.
* Has received the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor 12 times.
* Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle declared November 29, 2004 as Brett Favre Day to honor Favre's 200th consecutive NFL regular season start. That night, the Packers defeated the St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football.
* Men's Health Magazine voted Favre the "Toughest Person in America" in 2003.
* Chris Greicius Celebrity Award from the Make a Wish Foundation in 2007 for "being a true standout, even among the many generous celebrities who help create magical experiences for the kids who wish to meet them."
* United States Sports Academy Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2007 finishing ahead of Tiger Woods and Tom Brady.
Records and milestones
Favre currently possesses most of the well-known NFL career records for quarterbacks, including:
* Most AP NFL MVP awards: 3 (1995, 1996, 1997)
* Most consecutive starts by a quarterback (NFL): 253 (275 including playoffs)
* Most wins by a starting quarterback (NFL) regular season career: 160 (Regular season record: 160-93)
* Most career passing touchdowns: 442
* Most career passing yards: 61,655
* Most career pass completions: 5,377
* Most career pass attempts: 8,758
* Most career interceptions thrown: 288
* Most career games with at least three touchdowns: 63
Favre's 253 consecutive starts at the time of his retirement trailed only Jim Marshall's 270 consecutive starts as the longest such streak among players at any position.
In the playoffs, Favre stands behind only Joe Montana in pass completions, passing touchdowns, passing yards and passing attempts.
In addition, Favre owns a number of team records, having printed his name into almost every passing category in the annals of Green Bay Packers history, most recently setting the team record for consecutive completions with 20 on November 22, 2007, against the Detroit Lions. With 38 "come-from-behind" 4th quarter wins & 2 more overtime victories, Brett Favre is the Green Bay Packers record holder and second only to John Elway's 47 4th quarter or OT "come-back wins", in NFL history.
//end
If he stayed out of the top five in interceptions, he'd be one of the top three QB's of all time.
His presence on the field isn't replaceable. We may never see another QB that played the game with the excitement that Brett Favre had.

What are you talking about, Tony Romo plays the game exactly like him. Gunslinger, very evasive, makes weird/outstanding plays when he has to be evasive and get away from trouble, and always looks likes he's having fun. I'm not sayin this cause i'm a fan and i dont want to start stupid shit over this, but it is true. He's the closest thing to Favre than Favre himself.

i never really liked favre, he talked a lot of smack for someone with at least 5 guys protecting him every play. his leadership on the field was great, off the field he was so-so. i dont think he should have strung along the packers organization for as long as he has the last few years with his retirement and it probably would have benefitted them to get rodgers in more while he was still there.
but alas, packer fans sacrifice their firstborn to the man, so he must be worth something. :p

I respect the guy and all he accomplished, especially for the year he managed to scrape together when he seemed to be down and out. I'd put him in the top 10 greatest QBs, but #1 on the list of overrated QBs. He's extremely likable but is often rated higher than he should be (e.g. the ESPN poll stating him as top 3).

Seriously, I will miss him playing. He was fun to watch.
Also, to whoever said it, the eagles play the nfc west this year (and gb came in first compared to eagles div last), so this minimally affects them.

how many seasons did some of the other 'all time great' QB's play?
I'm sure I'll catch shit for not loving Favre but seems most of his 'accomplishments' come with longevity, sort of an Emmit Smith disease.
*No doubt he was a good QB, I'm just wondering if any pretty good QB who played 17 seasons with such consistency wouldn't do the same.*
AGT-Shady
March 5th, 2008, 04:22 PM
I tend to agree with you about longevity being a factor in records, but it's not like he was Emmitt or Rice clearly and rapidly delining but bouncing around from team to team trying to snag as many as he could before he was forced out. He made the Pro-Bowl last year, lead a team that nobody expected much out of to the NFC title game.
Again, as opposed to those other 2 players, not many of other all-time greats could have competed at that level thru 17 seasons.

Looks like Montana played 14 years, Marino 16, Elway 16, Unitas 19, Manning just played his 10th or 11th season and Brady just played his 8th or 9th season. Favre spent his first season in Atlanta completing 0 passes. The above numbers might be off by a year but some of the other guys you hear mentioned played about as long. Favre broke the TD record playing the same number of seasons as Marino or one less.

Unless it's Stadium Club 91 or 92, it's probably only ~$5-10 at most.
