to my real point for this thread, aside from general opening season talk, is who is with me on how having opening day in japan is bullshit. They're coming back and playing MORE PRESEASON GAMES? Bud Selig seriously needs to go... soon.

a baseball game on at 6am instead of prime time is a blessing. Baseball makes even sportscenter boring to watch.

I don't see what the big deal is, there are 162 freaking games.
The following preseason games are given to the teams so they can get a couple of scrimmages in while recovering from the jetlag/time change. I guess you are opposed to your team getting that resting period though.

Face it if it were any other team but your team you woudln't give a shit either

Agreed 100%. Seriously how often can you show a single home run as Top 10 play?

I would rather watch tennis or golf then baseball. I enjoy going to games but fuck it is boring on television.

um...
well since you think i care because its the redsox, I'll say the same thing bobby valentine said which I agree with. The japanese league has already started their season, so it interferes with their season (they did play exhibition games against both the A's and the redsox). Second, im PRETTY sure the league is based in AMERICA so it makes sense thats where it should start. They want the obvious extra revenue from advertising/etc they get from plkaying games in japan? Do it at some other point, not the FIRST GAME of the season. I'm not complaining about the rest either you dolt, the fact that they paly games that count, then play some that dont, then start up the real ones again. Its just a stupid idea for baseball as a league and as a sport for people to watch in genneral. How do you think A's fans felt they have to be up at 3am to see their team play its first game.

gj on telling me what I think though

this thread got derailed pretty quick, but whatever. prob cause its not that interesting of a topic. anyways, i dont have a problem with it starting in japan. i doubt it will ever make it to the point where every team starts to play overseas, but its a good opportunity for the MLB to capitalize on some other lucrative markets. and considering the amount of japanese players coming over to play, it made sense to give it a whirl. look at the NFL playing games in london. and they cant do it any other time than now, midseason would be ridiculous and im sure players would never go for that.

Why? Baseball isn't as physical so it doesn't wear out the players, it helps balance out environmental factors, proves that the sport is more about having a good team rather than an ok team with a few great players, and where else can you go to a day game in the middle of the work week :)

I hate seeing home runs in top 10 all time too, unless its bottom 9 down by 3 grand slam home run. I think all the NBA dunks are worst, Ive only seen 1 dunk in my life that impressed me and that was Carter dunking over some 7' guy. They need more catches in top 10 than homeruns, never get tired of seeing a guy go head first into bleachers fans/rail to catch a ball.

I agree, dives and home-runs are boring, but there aren't that many "better" plays that can happen daily, like infield home-runs, stealing home (without the pitcher fucking up by missing the catcher or throwing the ball into the dirt), or triple plays. Anyways, who cares?!? The NBA is virtually the same with dunks and buzzer beaters from half court.

Having that many games honestly waters down the regular season and makes each game all the more meaningless. You wanna know why college football and the nfl are so exciting and destroying MLB in ratings? Because in football you better get the job done every week or you are not going to be a champion, no matter if you're playing the worst team or the best team. There's no room for upsets. Thus, when someone like the rays beat the yankees, it's not that big of a deal, because they're just going to play again like what 12 more times over the course of the season?

Where is your logic? Football isn't the type of sport were you can play more than once a week due to the physical pounding. Basketball is limited to usually three games a week due to the high cardio level of play.

Baseball is pretty low on both factors (save pitching), so it allows for more games with ease. The pitchers are the only players that need rest, so it doesn't seem fair that an entire team should have to wait a week just because one guy's arm needs to heal.

There's no room for upsets. Thus, when someone like the rays beat the yankees, it's not that big of a deal, because they're just going to play again like what 12 more times over the course of the season?

It's about winning series with your pitching, not individual games. Like I said above, it's not fair to make the entire team wait just because one guy's arm needs to heal. More games mean more balance. The same would be true if football teams had 200 players so they could play every other night.

Tripwire
April 1st, 2008, 01:04 AM
True Kiken, but check out the padding hockey players have (it covers their entire bodies). Plus most of the hitting is a from "one" another player into a plexiglass wall, considerably softer than one football player getting sacked by 10 guys and the compacted earth while trying to shield a ball. Also, in hockey you're not going to bang or be banged into something every play; you're objective is to get the puck, which has no ownership. Football is the exact opposite, you MUST slam into the other team on every play in order to get to that ball, which is owned by the offense(except on a fumble of course, and when it is whoever goes after it will get slammed hard).

Also, it comes down to the nature of the sport. Football you have to play hard on each play because it's a sprint. Hockey, basketball, and soccer are more about endurance. Baseball is mostly about concentration and good aim.

You have obviously never played hockey. Just so you know, in hockey, you SPRINT when you're out there and always keep your feet moving. Since when is plexiglass soft either? And there is this hard thing called ice too. The padding is necessary because of ice; I've fractured my elbow in hockey by simply having my elbow pad slide down and my elbow hit the ice. This doesn't happen on grass/turf.

Hockey requires you to sprint, have endurance, and take a beating. This is coming from someone who played all sports at a high level (for the most part). I'm not trying to say football isn't extremely physical, which it is, I'm just saying that to try to diminish the physicality and speed required in hockey is not the smartest thing.

Either way, baseball needs this many games just because the way the sport is. There are so many factors that more games are required to reduce the margin of error and the sport allows it by its nature.

The best defensemen play up to 30 min as it's a little less intensive and the top fowards played 20-22 min a game. Keep in mind that it is continuous play for the most part though.

Agreed. One of the worst times of the year is after the NBA playoffs when all you get on TV on Sunday is a baseball game while waiting for the NFL. a) It's about time the Cubs finally realized they could out-spend everyone in their division.
b) Tony LaRussa managed human chemistry sets in Oakland and in St. Louis and has repeatedly buried his head in the sand. On my baseball hit list, he barely edges out Jose Canseco for #4..(Behind Clemens, Selig, and Dusty Baker, in that order.)
c) Winning >=90 games 5 times in the '00s yet winning a single world series. And that was when you went 83-79 in an absolutely awful NL Central.

Saying the Cardinals are one of the worst teams this year. I remember them saying something like that in the 06 WS and look who won that.:D
Man do i hate these so called experts.

I'm a Cardinals fan and even I can admit we're going to be terrible this year.

I went to the game last night, and let me just say its going to be a long season. I really, seriously hope I'm wrong, but I'm probably not. Lohse looked good last night, but we can't expect that on a consistent basis.

Cards offense is all or nothing basically. We're either going to score 2 or less runs, or we're going to score 8 or more. We explode for 5 in 2 innings in the rained out game, and the very next day we get shut down by fucking Kip Wells.

I don't think our defense is going to be completely terrible, though our whole outfield is pretty young and/or just new at playing out there. Iztruis could be ok but will most likely be shit, and who knows with Glaus. He cost us the game last night.

Our bullpen is still probably our strongest asset, but Ryan Franklin is turning back into a pumpkin. Who knew it would be a bad idea to give him a deal after he had his first ever good season but didn't even pitch 100 innings last year? Cardinals management sure didn't!

ok lets look at this a sec
1) early 90s with the A's i cant argue that. with the Cards who did he have ohh yeah Mcgwire and i do believe thats it. what about slammin Sammy Sosa, or was that entire thing in 98 because of him using a Corked bat. Not sure if yer a Cub fan judging by how yer trying to slam the Cards i would say you are. I bet you were following the race on the edge of your seat that entire season just like everyone else.

2) even though we went 83-79 we STILL WON THE WORLD SERRIES end of discussion.

I think the Redsox should just permanently move to Japan and get out of the Major Leagues. That would make baseball fun again. I'm sorry, I am not big into baseball but you can always tell an annoying Redsox fan by his religious brainwashed mentality which attempts to spread the fact that the Redsox are not the most annoying team in baseball.

Meanwhile, the Redsox fans ARE the most annoying fans in all of sports. It's like two gay guys waiting for movie tickets in line squeezing each others butts and giving each other the tongue and then acting like they aren't gay. It just doesn't work Redsox fans. We will always know Boston fans are the most annoying egotesticle pettifoggers on the planet and honestly I really hate hearing anything about the Redsox unless your going to tell me they are no longer playing baseball.

Cardinals are very underrated this year, which makes them very dangerous. There are a lot of expectations on the Cubs and Brewers to perform this year, but I don't think it's going to happen.

The Cardinals have a solid bullpen, and their rotation just has to hang on until after the All-Star Break when they'll have Carpenter, Mulder, Wainright, Pineiro, and Clement all back and healthy. The team finally dumped Rolen and Edmonds, who have been practically useless the past several years, and the youth in the outfield is something to watch. I think they'll take the mediocre NL Central and perform well in the playoffs.
