I installed this card on my comp hoping I'd get 100 fps in tfc. Well, ATM I'm only getting 40-60 fps. I've basically tried everything. fps_max 100, took off v-sync, tried setting the card on performance not quality, changing my rates, etc. Nothing seems to be working.
It's the 512 mb 8500 gt.

Your problem is Vista. Vista has a 20-30% performance hit with games. Install XP.

where did you change V-sync at? In the program, or in the video card's menu system?
And vista is not going to give you this big of an issue, I run Vista 32bit, and I get +125fps in source, and in TFC like 300+. (8800GT)
So my guess is, some reason it isn't holding the refresh issue, it fluxes between 40-60? Or is it constant? or you have a much more serious issue... One thing I found is with my computer monitor (wide screen LCD) it caps itself at 60fps. but all my games can run then, at constant 60fps, it does not vary at all. Which is interesting, that you should have be getting 40-60, but rather a constant value, because that is your monitor's max refresh value. (turning off v-sync allows it go go higher)
hmm...

I turned off V-sync in the NVIDIA Control Panel. It goes from 40-60 and it sometimes hits 80 and then it shoots back down.
I have a 22 inch widescreen Samsung 2ms Syncmaster 226bw.
Vista 32 bit, Pentium D 3.20GHz, 2 gigs of RAM.
I also tried getting rid of spyware and crap from my computer. That didn't help.

skoal you fail. Its what dude said: refresh rate, since you're on an LCD and playing TFC, it's gonna be a little tricky to get 100fps. Seeings how TFC is an old game programmed for onboard graphics... its not too kind to higher end shit.
But its your refresh rate. And like wuj said:
"the more ur card has to draw, the less fps you'll get, so having no walls draws a hell of a lot more than having walls"

There are a number of issues here.
1: Vista. It may not cause that much of a performance hit, but it does cause a hit. Look up the graphs if you don't believe me. Even with nothing running Vista uses a large amount of RAM, once you're in game at a high resolution you can run into problems.
2: The resolution you're running. 1680 is a pretty damned big resolution, running any game at that resolution is quite a bit more taxing on your system.
3: Your processor. The Pentium D is a fairly decent processor, but it's definately not 'current' or extremely quick by todays standards. HL / Source engine games are VERY CPU dependent.
4: Your video card. The 8500GT simply isn't that great a card. It's powerful 'enough' to run TFC and Source games, however when you add in the huge resolution, and the limited CPU, you're bound to get some hiccups.
5: Settings. AA and AF are 2 no-nos for the card you're running at high resolutions. If you turn these off you can expect to see a bit of a performance increase. Turning V-Sync on or off won't really have a performance impact, other than if you go above 60Hz (your monitors native refresh rate, you'll get some screen tearing.

if you figure anything out let me know i have the same problem with my 8400 GS. My TF2 runs at 100 fps my tfc runs at 40-60 more 60 constant... its gay!

i have a similar problem, my fps is stuck on 60 fps all the time in tfc, but i get 140 fps in hl2. i have a 3700+, 7800gt, 2gb ram, 1280x1024 lcd

If you're stuck at 60fps you probably have vsync turned on in the game settings. LCDs refresh at 60Hz (or 60 times per second) for the most part, so if vsync is turned on you will never see above 60. Setting your game to display more than 60 only ends up causing 'tearing', which is where one part of the screen is displaying one frame, and the other part is displaying a different frame. This causes what looks like a tear in the frame and generally looks bad. Displaying more than 60 used to give people an advantage as wait commands relied on frames, so the more frames you were getting the faster you would execute commands, the faster you would shoot, etc. Valve has since fixed this, or scaled it back in some way. I remember somebody doing a comparison and measuring the time it took to empty all 200 rounds in the AC, and now I think 25 fps empties it faster than 100.
Turning vsync on is almost always a good idea nowadays, unless your machine can't handle a consistent 60 fps.

if you force no v-sync, have developer 1, and fps_max 100 you should be fine :/
with v-sync disabled your framerate limit has nothing to do with your monitor refresh rate

You must be doing something wrong or missing a setting somewhere.
Or your machine can't handle more than 60 fps.
I know on my old ati, and my new nvidia card, there were manual settings in the video card properties that would override the application preferences. If vsync is off in-game, you may still have it turned on in the video card properties.
