I saw an ad for one in a bestbuy insert today and it looked pretty good...it was only $15 after rebate and that's a lot cheaper than what I'd seen before (the battery last 4-9minutes but that's long enough since I just want to have it for when the power resets)

I do have some questions though..
first what is this "shutdown software" and can it be customized?
and secondly this product has 4 surge protected outlets..2 of them have the battery backup feature...obviously 2 isn't enough for computer, monitor, speakers, cable modem...so would it be possible for me to plug my current surge protector with 6 sockets into ONE of the battery backup sockets or would that cause a problem?

I would assume, and the same goes for any software, that you can tailor it to your needs. I've used various shutdown programs in conjunction with my Motherboard Monitor so when the temp reaches a certain point it triggers the program. Anyway, it's likely you could use the software, and customize it, or just go without and shutdown yourself when the situation arises.
As for plugging one surge protector into another, I would ask the company that makes the product to verify your question, unless someone here can answer it and knows what they're talking about. ;)

The shutdown programs are designed to shut down your computer when the battery reacts to a powerloss from your main source. You can customize them to do just about anything such as shutting your computer down every night at a certain time. The best way to answer this is to buy the backup, and test it out. Best Buy gives 30 days on returns, so if your not satisfied, take it back.
As for your other question. It would not be a good idea. Plugging multiple surge devices into eachother can cause problems. May even result in breaking one of the two devices in your case. As for a battery backup, all you need plugged in the "battery" surge is your CPU (the big box that sits by your monitor) and your cable modem. Those are the only 2 devices you want the backup to take charge of incase of a power outage. Your monitor, and speaker systems dont have to stay active after a poweroutage. You just want your CPU on so you can properly shut it down. As for your cable modem it would be sensible to plug that in too in case you are downloading something and dont want to lose your internet.

the big box next to the monitor..lol
ok I see now..yea I was thinking I could just plug in tower and modem...since speakers and monitor reset immediately
well that's good I'll probably buy this and plug half in one and half in the other

Zogo: I have a surge protector battery backup. It has three plugins for the part running off of the battery, and three that are simply a normal surge protector. Becuase I might be using my computer during a lightning storm and would like to shut it down myself, I plugged my monitor and my computer into the battery backup plugs, and other items such as my speakers into the three normal surge protectors on the battery backup.

Zogo: I have the APC BAttery Backup 350VA. MSRP for $40, got it for $30. But I think I can save you a little money...you can get it for free. :D Tomorrow (Friday) at CompUSA, from 6pm-12am, you can buy the battery backup for $30, and have two mail in rebates and make the battery backup free. Check it out, and just for your information, my battery (The manual states) that it can probably last around 7 minutes, and around 3 or 4 with the monitor, I believe.
