i dont understand why we play maps like this. sanctic_r for all its problems is a very basic map, with a basic idea. This map plays like a fucking maze at times. Its too big, sure it looks pretty but christ, comon, simple is good.

i think on new maps, the leagues and admins should playtest the maps and then pick and choose which go in. democracy is nice, but on things such as this it is flawed, because noone will go check out the map or playtest them.

Don't like this map... the geometry is all weird and ugly, and the texture choices are very odd too. Ceilings are too low, corners are too sharp, etc. Compared to the polished, neat geometry in something like bases2k3 or stowaway2 it just seems quite ugly and rouge around the edges. Of course texture and geometry problems didn't stop darkness becoming a great map (though the geometry in that map gets annoying sometimes when you bang your head) so we will just have to see how it plays.

this map sucks... flat up..
1) hard to defend, just because theres so many places to go, and it will be kinda hard to get the calls down "he's going down that tunnely thingy!" "WHICH ONE?!" "HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW?!"
2) no really good conc spots (that i've seen). seriously, once you get in the base concs are just about useless...
3) i say it sucks, so it sucks :P

Yeah I dont think virus thought this would be played in leagues over his later maps...because this was his first one really. I'd rather see the fixed monkey_madness over this but will be interesting to see how it plays out. Really disappointed that maps like roasted_l and the stowaway's have never been played in US leagues :/ or shutdown_l

Yeah no offense to virus but this map seems like he didn't really have that much experience of mapping when he made it... it doesn't really have much of a vertical component inside the bases either (there is an upper and lower area, but there are no walkways or overhangs as you see in most maps), so it will probably play pretty dull like security_r, at least that's what I find playing security -- everyone is pretty much on the same plane, with just a few steps and ramps here and there. If you look at monkey madness or raw_r, the geometry of the bases is a lot cleaner, especially in raw_r (though the map as a whole is too large and the yard is a bit dull), and those maps as a whole just seem more interesting. I guess it just depends on how well balanced the play is rather than how interesting and pretty the maps are though.
Also it would be great to see stow2 or breach_l2 in leagues, but I think a lot of clans don't want extra weeks of 8v8 because it forces them to sit people.

Yeah, god forbid you spend 5-10 minutes figuring out the map... I went through it and pretty much memorized it after 7 or so minutes. I don't understand, tons of people say how it gets boring playing the same maps over and over, yet when unfamiliar maps show up in leagues, the same amount of people say the map is shit (sanctic_r, this, just to name some recent ones). Yes, sanctic_r does have some major fps problems, but I still think its a pretty cool map. And this map hasn't even been played in a god damn match yet, how can you say its terrible? Coming from a mappers standpoint, we make maps to give variety and because people ask for new maps, at least I do, but with tons of people complaining (yeah, constructive criticism is fine, but "this map sucks fucking dick" doesn't fall under that category), it can make a lot of the mappers pissed off, I'm sure.

Horrible, horrible map. I though I had seen the worst map ever in the form of BAM but this just beats it 100-0 in suckness. Absolutely horrible.

I tried doing that when I became the STA map admin but anything I suggested such as Waterfall_tfcl, Roasted, Firemesa... etc was shot down.... shrug.

It was fun when I played it in TFL-U. Not the best, but not the worst either. It's all a matter of opinin I guess.
And if you said there were few conc spots, you're very uncreative.

As someone already said, the map was thoroughly playtested in TFL Uncharted, as well as previously in individual playtests. Virus also thinks that it's not his best map, but it was the one that had the majority of votes of the new maps we had to chose from. Waterfall and Dragonfire were the other two if I recall.
Personally, I think you should all reserve your judgement until after the map has been played. It'll be up on Odin's Graveyard after Thursday, so you can really get a feel for it. If after a week you've played it several times and still hate it, then your opinion has validity.
Looking at a map and deciding you dislike it will never be a means of judgement I accept.

i looked at the map, i voted against it when voting came around. but i can guess that 3/4 of the clan leaders didnt look at it and picked it because god knows why.
and yes slimr, we need to make a campaign to get roasted, chimkey, and stowaway into league play. they are such fixtures in europe, and clans would love them here, old school style maps that map so well.

There is NOTHING wrong with this map. It is a lot of fun, and the way the base is designed allows for many different D strats. Runs like a maze? Are you kidding me, this map is quite simple...
For those of you who want to play nothing but sd2 and ofire, you can go join OGL and pick those maps for your matches. Leagues nowadays have like 1 new map every 2 months or so, and you guys just bitch and whine whenever it rolls around.
And I think someone in this thread said it was hard to defend...from our practices, it seemed like this map is quite the D map...but then again, our O sucks balls.:rolleyes:

You obviously don't have time to dl and load up all the new maps that are listed, because you're waaay to busy playing on "Bob's 2fort Server NO HACKS ALLOWED LOLOLOLROLFLF!". So, you choose by name.
While Dragonfire and Waterfall sound neat, NOTHING can beat a MONKEY, especially a CRAZY monkey.
Anyway, crazy_monkey is easy as hell on O, you just need to find the hidden quad damage...

NO!, compared to most ohter maps played there are not a lot of concs to do!
in the fr area, you have a conc up the big ramp, you have a thrown and slide to the flag.
in the switch, you have a thrown to the sec from the outside entrance
in the fd area (the only one with a ceiling) there is not any point to using one really unless they decide to plat some d there, and then the thrown to the down ramps....
there is a conc over the mountain wall between the bases. THAT IS IT!
so as an offensive person, you go in for switch. the outside is the easiest conc so you try that rather than the maze of stairs and crates in the interior. it is a low ceiling medium hall that will almost certianly have a soldier in it. NOT GOOD FUCING ODDS to get sec that way! (unless the soldier utterly sucks or you are just way better than the soldier)
then lets say you get sec, basically there is nothing more for you to do on offense from there other than run around the damn tunnel maze or, or back to the fd and come back down the fd ramps. but from those ramps there is not a good conc to the flag other than thrown out in the middle of the spam zone and pray that you can run in and hit it without dying on someones bullshit spam.
Lets say you get the touch, then you can conc off that little ramp (assuming you did not use too many concs to get in there in the first place). That puts you at the windy corridor to the switch, which if you die there is easy to lock down and if you get by it, means you mean teh switch d AGAIN! so you really have only one options, run out of fr, and try to conc out (since you can only conc up in this map) one of the ramps to the fd.
This is an offensive nightmare. If we get two caps a round on this, I will feel like we really did something great.
but I am sure somebody thinks I am just newb. Maybe they are right, but really, this is gonna suck hard.

I'm not a huge fan of this map, if nothing else but for its size. The only real *problem* with the size is that the lower leagues (3a's, 4a's, etc) would only be able to make like 1 run every minute. That just wouldn't be very fun to spend half the time running to the base.
On the other hand, I am glad there is a new map. New maps give everyone an opportunity to be creative and try something new. I'm not sure why everyone bitches so incessantly about new maps like this.. just play it, relax, and have fun. If it plays well it will rise to the top, if it doesn't, it won't be played again. Pretty simple.
Virus, stop making maps that are like 4 miles long, especially if you ever want to see them played in leagues with any consistency.

alot of people complaining how everyone wants new maps then complain about the new maps. thats not true, just maps like this are really mazy and get long winded..anyone remember monkey_madness in its first rotation? that map was almost as bad as totalwar, if you want new maps. bring in stowaway chimkey roasted and EVERY SINGLE DAMN MAP BREADFAN EVER MADE! shit breadfan has some simply amazing maps, i remember playtesting them...every single person there completely loved the maps... cmon STA and TFL LOOK AT BREADFAN'S MAPS >_<

Its an ok map, but im not sure about league play. There are a lot of unnecessary things in the map, like the lasers for instance. Most laser maps just arent fun anymore, and are very overplayed. Keep the size of the map without the lasers, and if u want to keep the lasers reduce the size. Add some names to the parts of the map and increase the skybox 10 fold like trench and if would be more offensive. But I can see it now as it being a piled D into the fr which equals an unfun map already...
edit: Id also like to add is when are leagues gonna start playing tradiational maps, I dont know about most of you but I like just about every map made up till a year or two ago....my suggestion is play more valve maps. It's like I never see 2fort or well or any tradiational maps. At least put maps in leagues that are balanced for O and D..just my 2 cents

I liked it.
If you say it runs like a maze, well then you only played it for less than 5 minutes.
I like how both o and d have big advantages they can use. O has many paths of attack, d gets lasers and fast spawning packs.

I kept up a good clip of 1 run/30 seconds moving at 160% as spy and I'm in 4a. ;P

How does a map like this even make it into league map voting?
There's no flag status at all (when you press 'i'). When the enemy touches your flag for the first time, there's only a verbal warning, no text (amongst all the voicecomm garbage and our team touching the enemy flag, I rely on the on-screen text as well as the verbals). And on subsequent touches, I think it was only text, and no verbals? I forget, but it was mental.
And it's ugly.

azlan, I played it in an OvD setting, and I thought it was horrible. After playing it tonight, I still agree that its horrible. I love new maps, but I don't like old maps that were never played so they look new but play like shit maps.
EDIT : Yes, AFM won in their TFL match, but it dosn't change the fact that its a pretty bad map.

I like the map. There are plenty of ways for O to enter the base, so it's not one of those totally low-scoring maps. It makes you come up with creative defenses. The only thing I really dislike about it is what someone else said earlier - the ceilings are too low in places and it kills my bhop.

talk to your clan leader... they vote for the maps...at least most of them do. A lot of clan leaders don't vote at all, and they bitch about the map rotation.

All but six clans at the time of the vote's conclusion voted in TFL. As any TFL clan can tell you, I usually go to great strides to make sure every clan has their voice heard in the Map Cycle vote every season. The choices for the new maps were Ravelin, Dragonfire, and Crazy_Monkey_l. I've playtested all three and enjoyed all three. As this post tells, some people hate the map and some people like it. Guess what, it's that way for every map.
Just remember when reading this thread, you need to put "I think.." before everyone's reaction, and then you have an accurate assetment of how popular the map really is.
On another note, only a few clans requested byes.
