View Full Version : Are Soldiers/Medics overpowered?

After a (somewhat short) reconcilation, my g/f and I are back together. What better way to celebrate by playing a TFC game, ya know, just 1 vs 1 on mulch_DM (ya, I sound like a nerd, I admit), when she says to me "Soldiers are fucking overpowered". Being a soldier player, I respond with a well timed "WTF?!"
She brings up the argument that the soldier has the ability suspend people in midair with their rockets (juggling), a super shotty, somewhat good speed (even better with bhop/strafe jumping), rjumping, and 200 armor/100 health.
Typical argument for someone's who's main class is medic (no offense to anyone, just making a jab at her), since they fail to realize that their class has 90 health/100 armor, a super shotty, 4 grenades, 2nd fastest speed in the game, ability to cover far distances with concussion jumps (battlement to battlement on Mulch_Trench anyone?), and mother!@#$ing infections.
I apoligize if this subject has been brought up before in the past week, I don't read these boards every day, so please, non of the "welcome to last week macros" :) This subject was brought to my attention all so suddenly and I wanted to know what the community thinks.

Shrug, some classes are always going to be better than others. It's impossible to make a perfect balance, so what does it matter?

Blizzard managed to accomplish perfect balance quite nicely with StarCraft.
So its doable!

if you guys are playing Mulch_dm why did she bring up that soldiers are overpowered? Weren't you both soldiers. And if someone thinks a certain class is overpowering whatever class they are playing, all they have to do is switch to the same class... then its even

Her comment wasn't just applying to Mulch_DM. It was applied to the game overall. She kicked my ass in Mulch, a soldier has nothing against a medic on that map.

Of course the classes are unbalanced...otherwise you would not need team work to be good. If everyine had the same skillz then it would be quite a boring game. A good medic and a good scout should be able to own just about any soldier in a match situation. Mulch should mulch same class. Cept a good Pyro mulchin a good soldier is fun as hell to watch and it ussually ends up 50/50.

Soldier and Medic have the best balance of health and speed for defense and offense, and they all get grenades. Grenades unbalance TFC.

sols and medics are not overpowered as compared to hws. which is why they are limited in all leagues.

Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses..its up to the player to take advantage of the strengths. For example on offense a medic is almost always more effective due to their ability to make twice as many runs over the course of a match compared to an O soldier, whereas the soldier is better utilized on defense rather than a medic blah blah yakety smackety.

Variety creates a "lack of balance" in the eyes of most. I, however, see it as different opportunities for different means of play. The variety allows us to be more intuitive, and take advantage of more things, and the game would not be nearly as enjoyable otherwise.

It's just that both classes provide the most potential, assuming skill is involved. They have the longest learning curves, but with lots of experience they can become one man tanks.

Pyro > soldier
In mulch_dm or any place where there is enough room for the pyro. Not saying the pyro is better at defending, just that the pyro should win in a battle to the death.

TFC is pretty much perfectle balanced in terms of classes, its just maps can fuck it up by giving def/off an unfair advantage etc.

If TFC was perfectly balanced in all the classes then there would be even application to all classes throughout the game. TFC is all about HWs, Sollys, Meds, and the occasional Engy or Demo. If it was then a scout would be, in general, a more effective capping class, but they aren't because they can't DM, so they are rarely used consistently. I really do wish that grenade damage was changed, but I think valve has pretty much given up on TFC. Wasn't there a patch that was supposed to come out back in like December? The one with the engy teleporters and shit?

You use certain classes to do different things. Soldiers are more powerful in that sense because a soldier is the main defender, and usually the defensive class used most in a match (hell it can even be offensive!). Scout is very weak because it is mainly used to run and get the flag. You wouldn't want the fastest class to have conc nades, 100 health 200 armor and a supershotgun if you were a defender. HWG is very strong healthwise, and they have a powerful weapon... but they lack in speed. Pyro...just...well I won't say sucks... but ya. Sniper can potentially be the most dangerous class - unfortunately, if they miss one shot it can be VERY costly.
Each class does their own little thing, and they must use whatever they are given... whether it is speed, ability to construct a sg, or long range firing, etc.
Bottom line - no changing anything!

I think TFC is pretty balanced as it is, cept for nades maybe. In league-play medics and soldiers are used more because they are the best classes for competition.

I think I might be the only person in TFC who thinks nades are fine. O.o

It depends on the person imho. A single medic can conc pass or destroy a good chunk of sols to get teh flag, although; a good soldier can destroy a wave of medics that try to get the flag. It all depends if the person is skilled enough to play that class to make a medic/soldier over powered. Good stuff.

The reason people choose soldier and medic is because the two classes have their own little things... and then some.

the only unbalanced thing is there are no chicks.
The spy should be a chick in a wetsuit with big titties and cameltoe if u were to look closely.

Well you gotta have a defensive class that can take care of themselves the best - that would be soldier. If every def class was easy to take down, it would be too easy on the offense, most especially in maps where the defense is spread out.
Also... you need a strong offense class like medic so you have a shot at taking down certain defenses... ones that are closer together.
