WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday it was cutting off military aid to 35 countries, including Colombia and six nations seeking NATO (news - web sites) membership, because they back the International Criminal Court and have not exempted Americans from possible prosecution.

The United States signed the 1998 treaty creating the court. But the Bush administration is afraid the tribunal in The Hague (news - web sites), Netherlands, backed by most European countries, might hear politically motivated prosecutions of U.S. military and civilian leaders.

lol! So we sign a treaty setting up a court to have war criminals tried but want to exclude ALL Americans from persecution. How the hell does that work. Have we come to the point where we believe we are that rightious now that we are above international laws that we helped set up.

Hah, this after people bickered about France's word being good for only four months; I wonder what those same people are going to say about this. But I guess the true 'American optimists' among the bunch will be quick to point out that five years is longer than four months.

Saying that we signed it and that the Bush administration does not want to sign it is only part of the story.

The treaty was signed during Clinton's reign, but was not ratified during the last 2 years of his Presidency. Not to mention that fact that its the entire government that must agree to it and not just the Executive branch...

Although I do not exactly think we should be exempt from the court, I do have a tendency to agree with the public "fear" statements.

Then again... We are the only super power left... So we can technically do whatever we want....
