How the fuck do I make these STAY away? I've tried Unabomber's (I think that's who wrote it) idea in the FAQ, which didn't work all the way. Does anybody else have a different idea? Getting one every minute or two is driving me crazy.

This is what I tried:
Disable the Messenger Service. Start -> run -> services.msc. Scroll down to the Messenger Service, right click -> properties -> Change start up type to 'disabled' and then stop the service (the button labelled stop).

It works until I reboot, and then it's back up and running...

If you are behind a nat based router, RTM and block the incoming ports 135, 137, 138, 139, and 445(tcp and udp). I don't recommend disabling the messenger service. Actually, you should be blocking everything incoming, except what you expressly need and trust.

If you use a 'personal firewall', you should be able to block to the same ports, and or non local access to the service.

If you don't use either of the above, and with the prices of nat based routers down to ~$30 or so, there is simply no excuse for running a system on a public ip.

when you stop it in the services extension, set the Startup Type to manual. then it won't restart on next bootup
