Let me break it down:

I live in Texas, and I use Cox Communications for Internet access. I was on vacation for three weeks. When I left the connection was perfect, pings were perfect, etc. I returned ~1 week ago, and my connection had gone to hell in that three week window.

Page loading seems fine. Download/Upload speeds seem as fast as the were. When I ping servers using HLIT or HLSW, they show regular ping reply (30-130 ms, depending on server). The problem I have deals with ping in TFC. From my previous 80 ping to recongamer servers, I now have ping that spikes regularly (every 3 or 4 seconds) to 1000 ping or more. From my 50-60 ping on Phat Farm servers, I now spike to 1000. I spike to 500+ on Odin's, which (if im not mistaken) is pretty much 100 miles from where I am. West coast servers are the same.

There was, however, an interlude on Thursday, where I was able to play TFL that night. Then around midnight, my ping again shot up to 500-1000. It has been the same since.

I have done a tracert to Phat Farm, RA's server, Odin's, etc., and I think I have been able to find some bad routers, although I'm not sure. There is a problem with this, however. I may or may not have bad routing to the east coast. I may or may not have bad routing to the west coast. However, my tracert to Odin's seems completely perfect, and I still spike to 500+ ms. My tracer to Vendetta's server on the east coast seems fine, and I spike there, too.

Anothing thing to point out: My friend lives no more than two blocks away from me, and we were connected to the SAME server at the SAME time. I had 600 ping, he had 50.

I have attempted to talk to my ISP about the problem, and they have told me that routers or TFC are the problem. This seems somewhat correct, since it's fine for short interludes, then goes back to being horrid. There's some things I don't understand:

Why would someone down the street from me ping 50 and I 500 to the same server at the same time?

Why is my tracert to GoW's server perfect, yet my ping is horrid?

Why is my download and page loading the same, yet ping in TFC is off the charts?

Why does my ping seem fine in HLIT and HLSW, yet when I enter the server, my ping is very high?

So this brings me to what I need to know, I guess. First off, I looked in the FAQ section, and I went to http://ww1.arin.net/whois/ to look up the bad routers. However, I'm not completely sure where to go from there. i.e. How do I report a potentially bad router? There are several e-mails and phone numbers listed. Which one(s) do I use? What should I say in my e-mail?

Secondly, do any of you know of anything else that could be causing my lag? Rates, hidden uploads. God, I don't know. Anything.

I think that's it. Geez, this is very long. I'm sorry for all the questions. Couldn't help it.

Thanks for any help beforehand.

No branches...not sure about the water. Could damage to my line make it work fine one day and horribly the next? Also, tech support said my "cable modem seems fine." :(

I had same problem, I also have Cox Cable... after about 2 months countlessphone calls, and roughly 10 visits to my house by the tech, I tried my neighbors cable modem and it worked fine. My modem must have been on the way out, and the one they gave me to test was bad... took me 2 months and I found it out on my own... no thanks to Cox. If you have a neighbor with cable modem that is on same node as you, ask then to borrow the modem for 10 minutes. Worked for me...

call a lot, and bitch. I had the same problem, they fixed something inside the line itself (I think air was getting in or something like that, I have cox) ... they are idiots, you just have to keep calling until they fix it. Try the modem thing out first, could fix your problem right away. Also, cox has bad routing that switches backbones part way down, so that can also affect the stability. Just call them a lot, and it should fix the problem eventually
