fps help

Ok I need help, im running on a pretty decent comp with an ok video card but my fps are SHIT, and they have been bad for a long time. I have a Geforce4 MX 440, a P3 with 733mhz and 128mb ram, Windows 98. The highest my fps will ever go is about 35, but in matches and in full pubs it easily goes down under 20. Ive been playing like this for awhile now and its getting very frustrating... its hard as hell to bhop and the game itself just doesnt run as smoothly as it should. I just recently DLed the newest drivers for my vid card and it didnt help. Is there anything I can do to get it up a little? A friend who used to have the exact same card as mine said his fps were always right around 60, which is much better than 18. If anyone can help please do so, thanks.

few things you can check.
first, go here and check your settings.

Then, is your vsync turned on or off? If you're running the Detonator drivers, you can check this by right clicking on desktop, selecting properties, then settings, advanced, then you should see a tab for your video settings. Under OpenGL settings, you should have a checkbox/radio button for vertical sync.
You might also want to check the refresh rate on your monitor.
Do this by again right clicking on desktop, properties, advanced, monitor. The highest refresh rate you can select should be the one you run in, as refresh rate has a huge impact on fps.

I'm sure some of these other guys can tell you more than i can, but
there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to run in the 80-90 range with that setup.

k... then can both of you help me? i have a similar setup... geforce4 mx440, pent 2 dual 700, 520mb ram... i run in opengl mode, my vertical sync is fine... i can get up to 90 something fps as long as i NEVER MOVE! as soon as i start running it drops to like 70... then i get outside the base and it hits 50-60, then i hit action and i'm playing at like 30 fps :\

so... could one of you tell me the settings you have or help me out or something? thanks in advance

I was wondering this: So I can change the refresh rate to the highest setting it has listed and it won't hurt my monitor/videocard?

DOC, follow the link in my first post, and you can tweak your own settings per your system/connection

SHREW, your options are NORMALLY limited to those that your monitor can handle. Third-party programs (like reforce.zip, etc.) let you user-select a refresh rate that may be dangerous for your monitor, but windows GENERALLY will not.
If you aren't sure, just google your monitor model number, and you should be able to get the specs from the mfgr's site.
