Downloading doesn't affect your ping in servers. It's what you upload sonny.
July 26th, 2003, 12:19 PM
With the vast majority of isp's, downloading causes your upload speed to drop, sonny.

Err yes it does, you need to be able to get the packets back from the server aswell.. not just send them.
and on topic: The uktfcl recruitment forums (http://www.far2cool.com/forum.aspx?FID=16) are a good place to start looking!

I don't know :(
But if I'd make some stuff up, I'd say it wudn't have that much of a difference. Seen as you only have to send the server info of urself, and the server has to send u info about the rest of the players / game events.. OK this is bs :)
Someone who possesses knowledge ( Defraaag ) answer the man! I'd like to know this myself too.

Yea, if you are on 56k. The chances of you lagging while downloading is slim if you are on cable. Unless you got some welfared out cable, then it sucks to be you ;D

If ur dling with full bandwith u will lag, no matter how fast ur conn is. And if ur not dling with full bandwith, ur obviously dling from a shite host and then it sucks to be u.

with the majority of players with broadband connections, isn't it all now to do with simply distance that affects ping? We all now pretty much have more than enough bandwidth to play HL over the net.

I played euro and I'm in alaska :/

If I even DL at half speed my ping jumps from 30 to 80 or so.. at nearing full speed I ping 200 :P

My internet spikes only if I have Kazza open. Like if I'm dling something off fileplanet it won't lag me in game. But Kazza is the devil. :\ (still even if Kazza is on it only lags me for a few seconds every 10 minutes or so)

Downloading causes major packet loss and higher pings as a whole, so long as you're using a fair percentage of your dl rate.
For instance my max DL at the moment is 180k/s or so. When I play and I download at over 100 k/s I lag like a monster.

Try -Kx-, they're good guys and I think they're looking for people.
They're 8 hours ahead of you if you're pacific time, and their leagues run about the same time there as ours do here. So if they have a match at 8pm it'll be noon for you. And fuck the ping, I played most matches with 250+...you get used to it.
oh...#killex on quakenet, and talk to space or and1e, ask them for a trial.

Yes, at the moment it does. My ISP used to run an RADSL network, or uncapped DSL in laymens terms. 7.1 MPS down and 1 MPS up (Cisco 678's max speed) were the rated speeds, but living at the very edge of the subscription limit I could only get 1.2 to 1.5 mb/s max DL (yeah I know, ONLY...) and 500 or 600 k/s max upload, for $40 Canadian a month. My ISP was rated as one of the top 3 residential ISP's in North America for like 3 years...
Then they realized they had no real competition in the area, and that they were only limiting themselves by not lowering the speed and extending the subscription limit. So, they lowered the speed and extended the subscription limit.

The guy who mentioned about distance from servers was correct about pings; HL is not bandwidth intensive like a lot of more modern games, hence why I pinged almost the same to localish servers on ISDN as I do on ADSL. Even on 56k I only pinged about 120-150! Only difference is the amount each increases with distance to server proportionally and what you can d/l in the background (56k/ISDN nothing, BB very small amounts, increasing as bandwidth does etc).
