So because something is free it has to suck. I always knew western Europe was 3rd world.

Yeah of course you'll pay for it. Im sure that everyone who could pay for it would.
It's not like I have a huge problem with universities not being free over there, but I have to admit I feel it's frightening that everything is business there.

Berkeley is comonly refered to as Cal. Dunno about Cal State though.
SadbutTrue
August 13th, 2003, 04:15 AM
UC Berkeley = Cal
Cal State = seperate line of state funded universities in california (UC, University of California, being the other).
Cal States are more geared at the average student who wants a 4 year education instead of a commmunity college, they are cheaper, get less funding in general, and do not offer the same level of education. But for those who go there, it does what it has to.
The UC system is the best public school system in the country. Although there was a recent fee hike, UC Berkeley, UCLA and soon UCSD are/will all be considered top 25 schools in the US, and of those schools (almost all the rest are private) they are the cheapest. I pay about 18k/year total (though I'm doing ROTC and that will slice it dramatically). UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine also offer impressive academic oppurtunities. The collegiate education in California is one of the few things that goes right politically and with our budget the way it is.
My recent question was whether I should go to UCLA or UC Berkeley. I couldn't get into MIT (1410 SAT/4.6+ weighted GPA/tons of extracurriculars still wouldn't have gotten me into contention). I like the west coast better anyways though.
GL btw Chicken, i remember you messaging me in irc about college. Best of luck, and I'm sure you'll do fine.

You're doing ROTC at Berkeley? Good luck, I hear a lot of their students hate the ROTC detachments because of the DoD's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and the recent war in Iraq. I dunno if you would receive a lot of flak for it (get it? flak? army? nevermind....), but still, GL.

if you want to be in texas, TU and A&M are the only good schools (public for sure, probably even better than most private). baylor and tech are a joke, along with cougar high and the various other public schools. course, it also depends on what you want to major in, but thats the general rule of thumb for texas kids. if you dont make TU or A&M, most texas kids go to tech, baylors for rich (somewhat snobby) kids. however rice is good, dont know much about smu or tcu. also depends on if you want to be at a religiously affiliated school or not (smu, tcu, and baylor are all such schools).

Baylor is now for rich or somewhat snobby Kids. Nice generalization there kiddo. Last time I checked, you just covered a small spectrum that makes up my fine school. I know plenty of people in my Major, as well as others who are friends outside my major, that are not rich. I myself am not rich nor have I ever been accused of being snobby. If you want a snobby or stuck up person, I'll direct you towards UT or SMU any day.
As for a Joke, like Tech, we have mandatory attendance, I don't know if If they have that at UT or A&M, but it does insure that if you don't go to class for eight days, you are SOL. You fail end of story. I've never heard that happening at UT or A&M, just if you make the tests and aren't caught cheating, you're cool. But that's what I've heard from mouths of those who go there. No disrespect to those of you that attend UT or A&M and don't fit those molds.
As for religious affiliated, yup Baylor's got that, but I don't mind it. I'm allowed to worship how I please, and sure there are some over zealous Baptists, but alot of places have that.
Just my two cents..

Some classes take attendance, some don't -
usually the classes that do, your attendance makes up like 10-20% of your overall grade.
And yeah, the classes that don't - if you want, just show up for tests and that's all you gotta do. Most of the time that's the case in the classes with 400+ students in them and you are nothing but a number.
And forever - the A&M VT game is gonna be good. I'm just really looking forward to this football season to see if A&M can actually hang with the big boys again :p

Just about everyone that I've been in contact with at UT are laid back and nice guys. If you think that being happy that you are at a university such as UT (which has many top-10 programs in the country) is "snobby" or "stuck-up", you are wrong. No one that I've ever met has ever been mean to someone because of a lack of money, intelligence, or otherwise. It is a very liberal university, so generally everyone is accepted here.
As far as attendence goes, attendence policies have nothing to do with the quality of education at a University. The facutly, staff, and environment is what matters. Its a student's choice to learn, the Univeristy isn't mandating it, but if a student decides to learn, then the quality of education comes into play. Attdenence policies only serve to force students to do things against their own will (ie learn).

Chase, it depends heavily on the college.
Some colleges could care less about activities, and they'll just look at your academic status.
You need to talk to that college and see what they emphasize in selecting their students.
Make sure you visit colleges to get an idea ahead of time before deciding if they are your #1, #2, etc. Usually the summer between your junior and senior year is a perfect time to do this.
Some of the stuff that UT looked at for admissions:
- Class Rank (they used this heavily)
- GPA
- SAT
- Any extra-curricular activities, volunteer jobs, or paid jobs
- Recommendation Letters
- Awards
While my SAT scores and GPA were average for UT (1250 on SAT, 4.0 weighted GPA), I had near extra-curricular stuff such as band and other clubs, NHS, Tri-M, and over 200 volunteer hours put in. This is what seperated me from everyone else and is why I got in, even though I was out-of-state.
[FDG]Sundae
August 17th, 2003, 03:15 PM
Yeah - it varies from college to college - find people who go to the one you're looking at and ask them.
For my year (class 2005) at Cornell we needed, for admissions, average SAT was 1440, big thing was math score had to be good tho - some people got in with 1250-1300 b/c they also had 800 math scores.
Grades in HS need to be, at least for junior/senior year, straight A's. Average HS gpa for CL 2005 was 3.989.
Sports/other activities/community service = VERY VERY VERY VERY important. I know someone with a 1600 SAT who was rejected b/c she did no community service/extracurricular activities.
Transportation: You are required to live on campus freshman year. Many colleges do that.
Financial Aid: Very good financial aid if you're poor. If you're middle class, you're f**ked. This goes for almost all private colleges.
Who to bribe: Always bribe someone with an image to lose. Never anyone minor, b/c they can pocket the money and ignore you, and nobody will care how much you howl.

It really depends where you go. My friend had a 1600, but didn't get into like any upper Ivy Leagues schools cause he was boring as hell in his interview and did boring extracurriculars. There were tons of asians just like him that applied there, so why would they take him? I only had a 1480 and got into Princeton and Harvard and some other places he didn't because I did activities that were interesting and that were more than just things to bad an application, they were things I liked doing. He also had a 4.0 and I had like a 3.85. So it's not all scores/grades, for a lot of schools it's what is unique that you can bring to them. The range of grades/scores is pretty big, so like BlueFire said, it's what you have that sets you apart that will help you out.
Streetwolf
August 20th, 2003, 09:47 PM
Definitely depends where you go. Can't stress enough that you have to DO things during high school; be a well-rounded student. Join clubs, go out for sports.. even if you only make JV it's better than nothing. VOLUNTEER!!! Colleges love it when you give something back to your community (after taking so much away from it perhaps :p). A job is nice too, plus you get paid :D. Don't forget about academics, though, because that is, without a doubt, the most important part of school, at least for the better colleges. You could have amazing SAT scores but you won't get anywhere decent with a shitty GPA. I had 4.82 after junior year, weighted, with 1480 SAT (800 math, 680 verbal). Rank 10 / 210.
So to sum it up, be active in a lot of things. Colleges like to see that you've been doing things as well as keeping up with your studies.

Alot of Ivy League schools like diversity. The admissions want to bring in people from interesting backgrounds. Those schools know that they'll be getting the smartest people to apply to their schools. It's just a matter of selecting students who are the most interesting and colourful while intelligent to add to their repertoire.
Which reminds me... a friend of mine applied to Harvard and everyone thought for sure he would get in. Extremely bright and I think he did extremely well on his SAT's. All the teachers love him and he is a really easy-going guy. In addition, he is also a pilot license (air cadet) which looks great on your portfolio. However, he did not get accepted because I feel that myself, his teachers, and most of our classmates who were aware that he didn't get in because he was of Middle Eastern background.

Statistics on the Hotel School:
Class Statistics (http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/about/statistics/)
Career Placement (http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/about/statistics/career.html)
Academic Programs (http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/about/academics/)
From students' perspective:
Hotel School is considered the "joke" or "party" school at Cornell by the other students. However, a lot of that has to do with the # of science/engineering/math students at Cornell who get completely overloaded with work. According to Hotel Students I've spoken to, while the workload during the year isn't particularly hard, they have an additional requirement that makes up for that - mainly that they are required to obtain internships at hotel-related industries during the summer months. I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard it from others, as well as from "Hotellies".

At first, I believed the Hotel school was totally inconsequential to what I wanted to do. But a few weeks ago, I received an information packet outlining several parts of the school. Law, real estate, communications are all essential parts to the program. The program really appeals to me now, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna apply - can't hurt having legacy and being Hispanic.
Thanks for the info, greatly appreciated.
