Polycount seems ok with me, its smooth, better than seeing where the polygons are.

Even with smoothing groups you can still see polygons. Download that high poly sphere world pack, it has smoothing groups but you can still see where some polygons start. If I was to make it any more low poly you would see even more.

This coming from a man who released a set of models that were all above 1000 polys :)

Anyways, dancing banannas fucking rule you. No doubt.

Its 2003, if you dont have a cpu that cant handle a few thousand polys your behind the times. Hell my cpu is nowhere near highend (1.2ghtz, 512 sd ram, geforce4 ti 4400) and I can pull 100 fps on a lan with 8 other people, 40-60 when on a full server with 20-32 people.

That is true, however its also a new engine which allows it to make the models appear better than what they are (has FSAA built right into the engine which reduces the "jaggies" alot, also not to mention the high red texture which some of which exceed 1024 for a dimension)..
Go download the Doom III alpha, most of the models there are roughly the same polycount as the Half-Life Garg. Its the bump mapping and specular shading which makes them look good. HL engine doesnt support either of those which limits the possibilities of making them look better, what we have to do is basically polygons and good skinwork. Also since we dont have very good options on transparency if we want to do a fake specular shading on a whole model we have to double the polycount (apply a chrome over the model and make transparent). Where as with others is a shader.

Download the Quake 4 Gladiator, tell me what looks better, glow or no glow?

Fake specular shading, Im helping ]LoRE[ do his Serious Sam pack for TFC. If we want to keep true to Serious Sam we have to apply it to all weapons (especially the minigun since it look bad without it).
