I hope my geforce 2 can run it, even if it's the minimum requirement. If not I'm on a Dell and that means I'm screwed. =\ Oh well I'm not about to buy a new computer to play a game. I'll just play TFC 'till it dies, and save up so eventually I can play HL2. Thats why this whole thing kinda pisses me off........oh well.

What are the optimal requirements for HL2?

SaltyDog
August 20th, 2003, 12:56 PM
All the gaming sites list this...

"The minimum system specs are currently targeted at a 700 MHz PC with 128 MB RAM and a DX6-level video card TNT2 etc, meaning you won't need a supercomputer to run Half-Life 2.

But on the machine above don't expect to see reflective water, dynamic shadows and bump-mapped textures. The game running at maximum detail 50/60 fps, machine required for this is approx 1600Mhz cpu, 256 mb ram, GeForce4 Ti card.

In real life you need the best from a new game so I would recommend a 2000 cpu, 512 mb ram, GeForce4 Ti4800 128 ddr or ATI Radeon equivalent.
The more power the better but not essential with this game."

I'm not near that at all....

1.4 Ghz
256 RDRAM
GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 128 MB DDR (650 MHz)

128 Meg Geforce4 Ti 4200. Fairly close to optimal. Doesn't support the directx9 stuff but it should handle HL2 pretty well.

2GHz P4, 256DDR, Radeon 9000 64meg

Not awesome, I'll probably be able to run it in with at least medium/high detail. I'll be at school when it comes out, so I won't even think about playing it untill I get out.

It's not the amount of ram your card has, it's the fill rate and memory bandwidth that are going to effect your FPS the most. I really dislike the fx 5200 because it only has a fill rate of 1 billion/sec and a memory bandwidth of 6.4 gb/s. In comparison my radeon has a fill rate of 3 billion/sec and a memory bandwidth of 21.8 gb/s. A ti4200 has a higher bandwidth and the same fill rate as the 5200 as well. Another bad thing I find with the 5200 is that it doesnt have z-buffer or colour compression so that bandwidth is going to be hurting. At least it has dx9 so you can have the advanced effects in HL2. Remind me and I'll get a chart up on tuesday of what direct x versions can do what with HL2.

No dont. I have a geforce 4 4200 64mb gainward golden sample. Its a card good enough to run all the games out there right now just fine.

Besides the longer you wait the better card you will be able to get down the road. Wait until HL2 has landed before you go wasting any money into what you 'think' will run it the best.
