I know that people are coming up with these opinionated threads all of the time but I was just wondering what people think makes you better, faster, match experience or lots of 2v2, 3v3, 2v1 etc. I cant decide because it you play in shitloads of matches, it teaches you to play better with a team, yet 2v2's rely more on your own skill. That being said, there HAVE been people who told me that 2v2's did little or nothing to raise their skill level. I just wanted some other opinions, and flames arent needed.

well, first i'll say that i consider myself a pretty decent soldier. I went from being horrible at soldier (couldnt hit ANYTHING, missed with rpg constantly, had horrible shotty aim etc) from being a half decent soldier with fairly good rpg aim (sorry if it sounds arrogant :( ). Now, in clan matches, I play offense. Pretty much every clan i've joined i played offense. In my whole tfc career ive played maybe 4 matches as D soldier (usually when our main D sols don't show up). So, for ME at least, 2v2's, 3v3's and etc helped me a great deal. For pure rocket aim and shotgun aim, in my opinion, 2v2's, 3v3's and etc are good. But part of being a good soldier is also knowing positioning, good comms, knowing how to play with a team, and etc. skills like those can only be learned in matchplay.

just my opinion, you don't have to agree ;)

As long as you're not playing openfire all the time, 2v2's can be good practice.

Nade whores are bred from the openfire womb.

Playing 2v2s will make you a better soldier in 2v2s. Playing matchplay will make you a better soldier in matches.

If you want to learn a few overall soldier skills that can be used in most any format, I recommend playing mulch_dm and learning how to use your rockets and nades together to be more effective. If you can learn to split (that is, shooting a rocket to one side of an enemy so he'll move away, and then throwing a grenade right where he's moving) well enough so you can consistently hit a person nearly dead on with a grenade, you'll be much better off in almost any DM situation.

2v2s have very different skill sets than matches. In 2v2s, especially on openfire, you will generally spend time shooting the flag, trying to stop concs with rockets, blocking the flag with your body, and DMing people in places where a soldier is not a very good class to DM with. 2v2s are all about landing a solid grenade on each medic, your rockets are entirely secondary.

Matchplay by far. You learn to play smarter and how to work with a team. 2v2's should not be judged on anything other than fun, just as mulch. Its good practice, but you could probably benefit more overall by playing on a good pub or in pickups. For those that argue 2v2 requires the same skill as matchplay, its just retarded. In 2v2's, on D you can resup after every offensive run and will usually have the same number nades as the offense attacking, if not more. On offense, you can either just dm your way past the offesne, or easily hit concs in open areas that would normally be guarded by another defender in a real matchplay situation.

Playing matches like you do 2v2's is one of the reasons why maps like arise, even 8v8, is low scoring. On offensive maps where you don't need much teamwork and just run at the flag (openfire and trench for example) 2v2's probably help. As for defensive maps where all 4 of the offense must work together as one group and pull the flag out together 2v2's probably help out very little.

Thats how i raised my skill level, but we didnt just play openfire either, we played alot of different maps. But you have to realize 1v1 and 2v2 is only personal skill, 9v9 is in a whole different ballpark. People like cheese and other openfire whores are fuckin terrible in match play because they only plya 2v2 and they only look after themselves. Although they are skillfull 1 on 1 they cant get shit done cause they dont know how to work with other players. So get your skill up with 1on1 and 2v2s then transfer it over in match play but work as a team :D

I personally like to pub in the right servers and not deal with the drama of 2v2.

TFC is equally gay no matter which way you play it. Just stare at your desktop for hours on end.

Matchplay. 2v2 can make you stupid for matchplay. And most of the time in 2v2. The meds on O have 4 nades, they come at you with no imcomings, throw 4 nades at you and then go for flag.

but since a lot of tryouts you are looking after yourself, (mainly 2v1, 3v2, 3v1) then 2v2's are the way to go :p i know i know, the top clans recruit based on what they've seen from you in matchplay/demos/reputation but a lot of clans do stick you in openfire and say "ok this tryout will be 2v1"
