1.Yes he can, but 'holding his own' means doing well as a spy, not doing well as a medic.

2. Yes and no. Spy has a very good arsenal to slow down even the heaviest of defense. The tranq gun and gas grenades will definetley slow the enemy down. Then the shotgun and grenades are good for taking on any defense. And the knife is good for HW's and snipers. And finally the nailgun is for SG. But on command maps the disguise is useless, unless your planning strictly on taking out SG's and the enemy. So if you are a very good spy and mulcher, then yes spy is good on any map.

3. What do you mean with this question? (1)Do you mean should the person who plays a spy should be good with the medic class, too or (2)should the person playing a spy be as good as a medic would?
For the the (1) question I would say yes. The medic and spy are similar, they have a nailgun, shotgun, and grenades. Their speeds are both similar. And also, the health and armor are similar, too.
For questions (2) I would say no. You can't expect as much from a spy than you would from a medic. The reason I say this is the spy and medic are similar and different. The biggest difference that cripples the spy is he doesn't have any concs in his arsenal. If he would, then yes he should be able to hang with the medic.

An unlikely spy who is quite effective with it is Defrag. Effective because he does the subtle, unselfish things that benefit an offense as a whole.

Most of the elite spys I see playing now remind me of a toss between kamikaze medics and confused wannabe soldiers.

Sai is by far, the best spy I have ever seen in action, with DV coming in second (in his prime... not when he was backup engy for Zt. :( ). Mich is good, Miyagi is surprisingly good, but no one knows that yet, stoner is good, zulrich pwns, and that's about it.

Lloyd can tranq and knife someone near respawn, or from behind really well, but when he gets spotted first, he gets owned and he rarely if ever goes for flags. But that's imho.

Zulrich's knife is ridiculous, but I'd say back in the day compact played spy so handily on maps like monkey he'd get the same amount of touches as the rest of our offy combined... kelvin was also amazing at spy before and after his army stint, I'll never forget that 8th demo v -Lf- where he fooled their entire defence repeatedly. :p

As Ep said, it's one thing to stab people and look handy, but it's quite another to get a lot of movement and to play off other people. On a lot of maps, the best spies are the ones the enemy team doesn't even notice until their flag is outgoing :p

Sai - he adds to a good offense where the average "good spy" would just be able to work around the same offense. That and he's the fastest non bhop player I've ever seen (he does bhop hella fast, just that he's also hella fast when he doesn't). Once he's inside your defense you don't get a chance to decide if he's a spy or not. You shoot the moment you see him or you die/loose the flag.
