This guy says it'll boost performance on ATI cards up to about 40%. I can't test it, since I'm on a crappy nvidia card for now... someone wanna try this and say how it works?

update: My roommate tried it on his 9700 Pro. In conjuction with the 4.9 Doom beta Catalysts, it gave him a very large boost in pure lighting situations; his average fps via timedemo went from about 45 to 65. Neither of us could see a difference in the image quality, so it's free performance.

Bumped up mine, im gonna try upping the resolution/qual and see if i still get good frame rates, I went up to about 60-65 with 800x600 - medium. Still having the problem with crashing though, im gonna try lowering my cpu OC and see if that fixes my problems.

Bah, this shit is confusing. How do you edit the interaction.vfp file in winrar? It just lets me view it, but not edit it. :/ And I don't know how to associate it with notepad, either.

EDIT: Nevermined, I got it. Yeah, I'm getting better performance out of my 9700 pro with this. Thanks for the link.

I've been following this thread for about 3 days now.
The latest tweaks are interesting
Force 16x AF via the control panel
And add those lines. I went from 24 fps to 37 in the timedemo because of this tweak.

Athlon 1700+ @ 2000+
1gb of mixed ram PC2100/PC2700 :\
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb. Stock speeds

I'm mostly cpu limited but I'm getting decent frames in 800x600 D:

Followup, Carmack responds to the issue:

Basically, it just reduces the quality of specular highlights a little bit. Worth a big jump in fps, imo.
