After some gay ass shipping problems by gamestop (n00bs), I got Phantom Brave yesterday.
double u, oh, oh, tee, bitch.
Granted I'll say the story so far is way below par of Disgaea, and even La Pucelle, it's good in it's own way.
But the new system is great.
The whole "confine" thing is great as hell, never thought i'd give a fuck about some damn shrubs and rocks.
Only thing I hate about it is how it's impossible to protect backline people by blocking
I'm not gunna say too much, since it's 2 days old, but I think ima play it all night 2night, seeing how I have a 3 day weekend (w00t for labor day)

SPOILER
I'm only up to the 3rd episode, (not very far), but so far it's about a phantom, Ash, who died while on a sort-of bounty hunter job with a few companions. These companions had a lil' girl, Marona. Ash was killed, but was spared by being able to live as a phantom, and he hangs around Marona to protect her.
The battle system is kinda deep cause of this concept (deeper than I woulda imagined, lol). But it's fuckin awesome.
I'll go into detail if u want, or I'll let you get the game and try for yourself
END OF SPOILER

Stores up here were supposed to get it on August 31, but they're all a bunch of liars. My brother picked it up a couple of days ago, but I was out this weekend so I haven't gotten to play it yet. I saw my bro do a couple of fights, things look pretty interesting. I'll post/edit this post after I get to play it for myself.

I've been playing this most of yesterday and today (yay for university not starting until Thursday!) and it's pretty cool. 'Confine' is certainly interesting (your characters are almost all phantoms, and you have to confine them into objects on the battlefield before they can do anything), and being able to use random crap around the battlefield is very cool. Beating people up with things like pillars, cacti, rocks, or trees is very satisfying. It's also cool how you can use other allies' weapons if they run out of turns.
The fact that you can only have characters out a certain number of turns is both good and bad. It's good in that it forces you to use multiple characters, one power character is not good enough because they probably won't last for the whole fight. It can be bad in boss fights; I've found that if you didn't level enough, then your 'good' characters will run out of turns and you have to hope that your second stringers can finish the job.
The advanced stuff like fusion and titles are pretty interesting, though I haven't done much with them so far. Fusion basically lets you combine weapons/characters into each other to gain skills and stats. Titles are a bit harder to explain...all weapons, characters, and items have a 'title' which will give them certain stat bonuses and penalties. So in the beginning, you want to try and get your warriors titles that will raise hp, atk, and def in exchange for int and res penalties. You can get better titles later on which have smaller/no penalties and bigger bonuses.
I'm on chapter 6 now and I'm very happy with the game. If you liked Disgaea and/or La Pucelle you will probably like this game as well. The battle system is very different from those two, however. Movement isn't tile-based anymore...you just have a movement 'range'. Same with attacks. Instead of the your side goes/their side goes way of deciding turns, it now depends on the character's speed. Confinement completely changes how you bring out characters, and items take a much bigger role in battles as well, as mentioned above.

Chapter 6 or Episode 6? O_O
The thing I hate most right now is the fusing thing.
I have to pretty much force myself to toss away any weapon i've built up to learn a few spells. Kinda depressing :(
As for the "one power fighter" comment, i'll go a step farther and say u better have a slew of good people, cause shit can go bad at the drop of a dime, lol.

On a side note, I find it funny how there's a slew of Disgaea references, but none to La Pucelle. :( *Nin nin!*

Episodes...chapters...all the same :) I played a bit more today and got to episode 7 now, damn guys there are tough. Fusion isn't that bad...I'd be more depressed if random cactuses on the maps didn't have more attack power than my swords! If you fuse weapons together, you do get some stat bonuses on the host weapon, so it's not all lost.
Did you get an Archer? They look exactly the same as the ones from Disgaea. I got one recently and they seem pretty good in this game. They come with Quick Attack (like what Ash has) so they can act right away, ATK and SPD seem pretty good on them too.
My main party right now is mostly physical attackers: Ash, male+female warrior, and one of those shaman/mystic guys (the half melee/half magic), and a mage with ice/thunder magic. I have a bunch of second stringers that can also do some damage, but those 5 are my best right now. I'm levelling up the Archer now to see if she'll fit in.

na, havent got an archer yet, kinda figured they were there though. O_O
My man party is
Ash
2 Fighters
1 Valkyre (sp)
1 Merchant (mole whacks the shit outta anything that moves :o)
1 witch (ice wind fire + mega ice wind fire)
Marona (can actually hold her own for a bit)
I got a healer and a few 2nd stringers, but my 2nd string is TERRIBLE. O_O

I'm possibly gonna buy this game. Is there anyone that has gotten through most of it and still thinks it was worth paying $50 for?

I'd say it's worth it, but I still have a lot more to do in the game (school owns me). Dogy is further than me, but I have a feeling he will also say that it's worth it :)
edit: If you liked Disgaea and/or La Pucelle, you will like this game. It's by the same company.

i just got through the 2nd chapter (11th ep i think), and I say it's worth 50 bucks.
However, I say this cause I am a complete SRPG whore, and this is a complete change from other SRPGS. The only other game/series that i've played with this notable of a change has been front mission.... just cause it's mechs and shit.
_____
But hey fogel, I got knights and mystics also...
... granted I got my ass tryin to get archers 1st time through.
I didnt note that they started on level 17. Which wasnt a problem till i had to fight a fuckin boss...
... oh god...
.. half my party was already dead, and then the half that was left was swamped by like 905289385093285209358230958923058239058209538 fusionists and wizards and merchants and shit, OH MY. :(
It was ridiculous.
Still fun though. Today I finished the last fight in ch. 2. Died 'bout 2x tryin to do it cause of gay ass roundhouse (u know u hate that fuckin shit too). Kinda won by luck-of-the-draw, too.
