"He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corners Of Our Rooms" - A Silver Mount Zion

I've given this a few listens now, and I thought I'd share it with you all. I didn't like it much at first, but it's definitely grown on me. A few things you should know:

1) The music is quite repetitive and simple.
2) It's mostly instrumental.
3) The (rare) singing is awful.

So why am I recommending it? Because it just fucking touches me in a way I cannot explain. You've got to listen to this correctly to get the full effect though.

First, you MUST listen to the whole album, with the songs in the correct order (as they are on the CD). Preferabbly in one sitting. It's meant to be an album, not a bunch of songs randomly thrown together. The individual pieces aren't that great, but they form a very nice whole.

Second, you must listen to it in the dark. By yourself. With headphones. Loud.

Third, I think it helps to know the back story. The album is an elegy for a dead dog.

Anyway, here are the track listings:

1. Broken Chords Can Sing A Little (8:39) <---- my least favorite
2. Sit In The Middle Of Three Galloping Dogs (5:08)
3. Stumble Then Rise On Some Awkward Morning (6:04)
4. Movie (Never Made) (3:23)
5. Thirteen Angels Standing Guard 'Round The Side Of Your Bed (7:22)
6. Long March Rocket or Doomed Airliner (0:05)
7. Blown Out Joy From Heaven's Mercied Hole (9:47)
8. For Wanda (6:38) <---- my favorite

So if you've got about 45 minutes to set aside, I highly recommend you give it a listen. I think you'll either love it or hate it. If you do like it, "Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards" is also very good, and probably more accessible as well.

What genre would you classify it under?

I might give it a listen later this week.

I'm a casual fan of Godspeed You Black Emperor and their ridiculous number of side projects, but rarely do I have the time and patience to sit through some of their more self-indulgent/less rewarding pieces. With that being said, this is indeed a gorgeous album to listen to with a pair of headphones while laying around in the dark.

If you're expecting some sort of entertainment value, I'd recommend going with more accesible stuff like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and Explosions In The Sky instead.

And as a last bit of negativity, I'd just like to throw out the fact that Broken Social Scene is the most overrated band to ever come out of the post-rock genre.

What genre would you classify it under?
I really don't know what the correct term would be.

Like I said, it's mostly instrumental. Most of the pieces are centered around a combination of piano, violin, and (I think) cello. It's not quite classical though. Sorry for the lack of help/knowledge here, it's just something you have to hear.

Sounds like post(PAF)-rock to me. ;)

I tried to buy it today but Fred Meyer or Best Buy didn't have it and it pissed me off. I tried Soulseek/IRC and niether of those had it either :/

You're probably not going to be able to find it in a retail store. If you can contact me on IRC (cancer1), I'd be happy to, ahem, "help you find it".
