View Full Version : Best Drummer?

In light of Palmy's generic guitarist thread, figured I'd make one for drummers.

I was recently looking around for drumming stuff, and found a few videos of these two guys. Both are pretty intense with solo stuff, and doing silly tricks and whatnot.

Thomas Lang (check the top right video) http://www.hudsonmusic.com/QuickTime/LANG/LANGQT.html
and more popular,
John Blackwell http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/johnblackwellgroove.html

so who's your pick?

I'll do it before Palmy does, Flo from Cryptosy. He's an insanely good drummer. Easily one of the best if not the best.

SO PALMY SINCE THAT HAS BEEN PUT ASIDE LETS NAME SOME OTHER GOOD DRUMMERS

Hella's Drummer Zach Hill is very very talented, the stuff he does live only adds to it.

I have heard N*Sync's drummer is insanely talented (from my old drum instructor, Jim Sisson, and he knows his shit) but I haven't found any of his solos or other bands or anything.

Wouldn't doubt it. Pop drummers like those are generally pretty amazing.

The Wonderful Flo Mounier (http://www.tehsug.net/thrash/Flo%20Mounier%20-%20Cryptopsy%20-%20Drum%20Solo.zip)

Also that's not a good example of N*Syncs drummers skill. (Well from what I have heard)

Question: How can anyone like that trash? Justin's voice was just pre-pubescent and annoying. And I enjoy Stratovarius.

The random sounds he made didn't help anything.

I don't like saying there's a definite best, but here are some of my influences:

Virgil Donati - His patterns are insane. Great player and very versatile (fusion to pop). Can overplay at times, but mostly plays in the pocket. He's really in his prime now, and is pushing modern drumming forward.

Elvin Jones - The epitome of taste. Outstanding cymbal and polyrhythmic work. I'm starting to really listen to jazz and he has stood above others that I've heard from.

Carter Beauford & Chad Sexton are perhaps my biggest sources of inspiration these days. Great sense of groove (the most important aspect of being a drummer IMO), taste and ability.

No love for Art Blakey or Buddy Rich here .

I was only going to name some jazz drummers because I'm partially clueless in the metal genre and I'd go off into naming some of the guys I worked with in DCI and PASICs. I love metal drumming and all, we used to listen to it hardcore on tour, but I can't imagine anyone here being enthralled with jazz or technical drummers(there's quite a few guys our age that'd blow some guys you're listing right out of the water).

Actually, I enjoy jazz drumming and a good amount of jazz as a whole. And the drummers I listed rape every single jazz drummer I've heard. And yes, they are EXTREMELY technical.

I really hope you aren't trying to say your guys could sit in and do a set of 13 bars and play like Rich or Blakey. I'm not trying to say jazz drummers could replace metal guys, but trying to compare the technicality of many jazz drummers for who playing technical is an evil of jazz to guys who do it and need it to refine and make their music that much better is just laughable. Again, I'm not bashing metal drummers, some of them are insane, but cmon.

Well, I haven't heard Rich or Blakey, and you probably have heard the drummers I've listed. So why don't we both post some clips of our 'best' drummers?

I'll never understand the public's fascination with jazz and the high respect it has, while many equally talented (but in a different style) musicians hardly get any. A good bebop drummer would have just a hard a time playing Messuggah as Haake would having to play a bebop tune.

There are plenty of great jazz musicians, but the very good ones outnumber the crappy ones just like in any genre. There are hacks in both genre, it just so happens that few hacks make it to the top in jazz, whereas they do in others. The audience is very critical, selective and demands more in terms of skill than other genres.

I prefer a loose approach to jazz drumming and I even mentioned Jones in my list of "best" drummers. Never really cared for Rich.

Also, I need to add Harrison (of porcupine tree) to my list of current favorites. Some really good stuff, "The Sound of Muzak" has some killer drumming in 7.

Uh oh, look out, its Palmy giving an opinion about everything because he is a known music God. Oh, wait, you're not, you're some misinformed metal head. I already said I was fairly in the dark with metal but you somehow know everything about jazz(sorry, you don't even come close and if you want to start a jazz thread go ahead), especially drummers(wow, I haven't been drumming for over half of my life or anything), went out and listened to at most 1 Art Blakey CD although I really doubt it was even that much and said "Hey, huh huh, my guys can do anything those guys can without a problem because I'm vastly misinformed about the talent needed to improvise well and play a genre that is so completely different from metal that comparing drummers is beyond fucking stupid." I was never the one who said Rich or Blakey or someone of the like could ever do what those guys do, but there's no fucking way your metal drummers are just Jesus Christ in disguise and can transcend genres with ease like you did.

Please Palmy, dazzle me more with your amazing knowledge of jazz and percussion.

God forbid I give an opinion on a music forum. That's fine if you think I'm a misinformed metal head (nevermind the fact that ONE out of my top three favorite artists of the moment are metal), but that's only because you're a pretentious jazz elitist.

First, please tell me where I said I know everything about jazz. Please. Just one quote that says this.

Second, you were the one that stated there were a couple drummers you knew of that would completely blow the guys I'm listening to out of the water.

Third, the drummers I listed fucking grew up doing jazz and latin drumming.

Fourth, if you think I've listened to the wrong Art Blakey stuff, I already suggested you post some clips.

Forever, you have nothing to talk about, so just shut up. Thanks.

I just listened to a whole CD of Cryptopsy. You really dont know a thing about percussion if you actually think that drummer is more talented then a jazz drummer say, John Blackwell. The ONLY category Flo would win is stamina. No contests, he really isn't that great.

My opinion anyways, after playing drums for roughly 10 years.

and pretty much the whole list above plus Tim Alexander. Primus was the first band that made me want to start playing drums, Rush was second, then the Who, Led Zep and currently Tool keep me inspired. And another odd choice would be Ginger Fish from Marilyn Manson's band, he has some pretty kick ass beats hiding behind that freakish appearance.
