Ok, when I put in a CD with some exe files on it, all different programs, NONE will install. they all give me weird errors aswell. When I put the same files on a USB Key and try to install the files they work perfectly fine and install like nothing.

So I thoguht "Hey, I'll try a new CD-rom!" Did that and same issue. I then ran a full windows xp re-install. Same issue. I upgraded the bios, no help. I also tested the ram and hard drive. No errors and programs still wont install.

Anyone have any other suggestions? The errors I get have no file or code in them. Just generic error, sorta strange looking to me. If you want to know the PC specs goto Here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=ca&docname=c00280656&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_CAEN).

Drag the .exe's over on to your desktop. I cant install things from my cd's either, but when you drag them over it works for me.

Sounds like your CD drive is about to die.:(

What about flashing the CD-ROM drive's firmware? It could be that your drive may be having specific problems with that particular media, and that a new flash may solve it.

Otherwise, it might be a read / write permission error, since all files on CD-ROM's are read-only.

Probably the above.. old cd-roms have problems reading some of the new formats..

If not, move the cd-rom off the same controller as the hard disk.. make sure it is set for slave and not cable select.. i have had this happen too..

Hmm, I tried the CD-rom(as slave) on the same IDE channel as the HDD(as master) and it works perfect. Is it possible for only 1 IDE channel to be dead? That's weird. Anyone have ideas on how to make that one IDE channel work? I don't have a cable long enough to use the CD-rom and HDD on one IDE connection.

The cables we have here are short una. Also this is for work.
