View Full Version : First day ever playing TFC

The thread on what you miss about the old days of TFC got me remembering the first day I ever played it. I had no idea back in 2000 that i would be hooked on it for the next three or four years.
My first day playing my rlf freind [NFK]Kronos, said stop playing HLDM and play TFC its way better Ill show you how.
I go into my first map 2 fort. I spawn in the ramp room spawn. Im like whoa you actually spawn in a room not just at a spot out in the open. Kool.
Then Im like OK what the hell do I do now.
I see guys running out the spawn door and go ok Ill follow them.
These guys moved so fast they must know what they were doing, the didnt even hesitate, lol that impressed me. But as I walked out of spawn the scout just flew to the balcony. I said ok Ill go that way and they dissapeared.
I had no idea what the objective was of 2fort or TFC, let alone where or what a Flag room was.
Ill never forget that first few moments of TFC, as it would become a huge part of my life.

My father basically said "This game moves way to fast for me, wanna try it?"
The first map I ever played was badlands, and all I remember was thinking "how retarded is this soldier class, i'm going hwguy."

I rape all, as the first time I played TFC on my PC i didnt even have half life
thats right folks, i was playing on the Realworks TFC only demo! I played TFC for about 6 months before I knew it was based off half life. I bought the ultra-rare Realworks TFC only package for $19.95, it sucked cause patches came out 2 weeks late then eventually stopped coming out.

my first ever experience with the game was watching my cousin ([TTK]wonky, i believe was his name at the time) on 2mesa3. i felt like i was drunk trying to keep track of all the shit going on. He let me fuck around on vidars after his match, hooked ever since

a buddy of mine at one of my part time jobs told me about TFC. He hooked me up with a disk/key and I went into a server with him...was on warpath and basically I went sniper and tried to snipe people. He pretty much raped my set. We then went to 2fort right after and did some more sniping....from there i started to pub on 2fort all the time and try out other classes...

Stayed home sick from school the day it was release. No servers were up for the first our so I did the HL training course as demo. Wouldn't let me go anywhere.

My friend said I should play Team Fortress Classic instead of Counter-Strike for some reason. It took me almost 4 days to figure out how to install the 1.1.0.6 patch, find the name of the maps, and actually refresh the server list.

For me, I was messing around in the mods screen and saw Team Fortress Classic on it. Loaded it up and I still remember exactly what I did. Joined a server playing cz2, went blue pyro and started running around aimlessly with my flamethrower. Didn't really get into clanning for a while after that, but it was all good fun.

First map was badlands and I was medic. A friendly demoman requested my aid and I was just basically his personal medic. I wouldn't fight and was only content to keep healing him. Eventually I grew some balls and started infecting and running laughing to myself for such a cunning move, hehe ;D.
TFC was my first experience actually playing an online multiplayer game. I was just amazed at the 3d-ness of the game and the variety of classes. That's what got me hooked.

First time I saw the game was at my uncle's house, he ran a QWTF server, and then changed it over to a TFC server after it came out. I played a few times while I was over there, but always had other things to do so never got to play for long.
Then after the 1.5 patch came out, he got bored and gave me his HL disk and key. The first map I played was well, and I played soldier. During the installation I guess, one of my files was corrupted so I just ignored it. Everything worked fine, except for 2fort. So for the first 6 months or so, until I formatted my pc and had to reinstall, I couldn't play 2fort at all. I think I had played it a total of less than 10 times by the time I had my tryout for TDA and they made me play the basement.

I had been following the development of TFC for a few months prior to its release. I had been following the development of TF2 but since news for that kinda died out I got more into TFC. I got the HL patch that included TFC the day of or the day after its release.
I had been playing qwtf for about a year before the release of TFC so I had a good understanding of all the classes and most of the maps included with the release. I don't remember much from my first day but I do know the first server I jumped in was playing push.

3 rl friends of mine (they are all brothers, LostLemming, Vlad, and SchrodingersCat aka pitsniper) used to play db pubs together all the time and generally raped shit. i would go from room to room and watch each of them on their diff comps. sometimes when they were done one of them would let me play for a few. i would usually play db of 2fortsniper. i sucked horribly. another friend of mine had a halflife cd and cdkey which he never played cuz he was on dialup. so he let me have it. i was also on dialup at the time. i tried to play a few times but my connection/pc was too bad (would freeze up for 10 secs at a time). so i had it installed on my comp for like a year or two before i finally got a cable connection and could play on my own comp.
me and those 3 brothers and another friend of ours (Wicket) would later go on to start .rh in ADL8v8 :) good times.

Phenom asked me on the bus during the first few weeks of 10th grade if I had Half-Life. When I said no, he made fun of me and told me to stop by his house so I could check it out. It was on this fateful day that I was first exposed to the beauty that is TFC.
I played for awhile at his house, but once I got my TOTALLY RAD and SCREAMING FAST Pentium II 400 MHZ gaming-rig, I installed it. The first time I played on my own computer, I played as an HWGuy and it was on a map called Canyon. I basically hid all over the map, and bitched when Phenom sniped me. That was a looooong time ago.
I still remember the first time Phenom came to my house and played the game on my comp. He had used a trackball since the game came out, and all he kept saying was 'seriously, a regular mouse makes this game awesome.' He's a lefty, and watching him use a trackball with his left hand while it was on the right side of his desk was truly hillarious. He still managed with it though.

My girlfriend introduced me to Half-Life when it first came out 1998? I loved it even after beating it and kinda let it simmer for a year or two.
For a while I noticed this multiplayer mod called Team Fortress Classic, but I had 56K modem and I was like "hell no - there is no way this 56K could handle it" and I left it alone.
Then one fateful Saturday afternoon I was bored and said "Ah, what the hell I'll give it a shot."
I remember the second I joined a server and was floating in spec. The map was Hunted and I heard all this booming and saw all these ppl running around. HOLY SHIT! Actual real people playing from all over the country!?!?!! (32 to be exact - lol remember those days?)
I think I finally went to sleep at 2 PM the following Sunday.

First map I played was dustbowl. I think I switched between Sniper Hw and Solly my first few months and I was impressed with the physics in the game.

I ALWAYS went waterway to avoid spam and when i was going up the spiral stairs i saw a guy and all i did was shoot blue pipes everywhere (didnt change guns)... and i ended up killing him.. so i was like "fuck im good"

I had seen my friend and roomate Nuker/SPQR play several matches and so I picked up all the rules/classes that are standard now. He bought me a copy for my birthday, and set me up with the good servers. I started off as soldier and took his advice which was to resist the temptation to play either sniper or HW when starting off.

I don't remember my first time actually playing TFC, my memory isn't nearly that good. However, I do remember reading an article in my neighbor's PCGamer about the frolicking good times their staff had had playing hunted. I didn't think much of it at the time (except "hey, that sounds like fun!").
Some months later I reached one of those momentous turning points in my life, one of those times when I would have to make a decision that would impact the rest of my life: I was standing in a computer games store in the mall (it's an ebgames now) and I had Half-Life, GOTY edition in one hand, and Homeworld in the other. With a little friendly advice from a friend (along the lines of dude, killing zombies and aliens is way cooler than flying spaceships around) I talked my mom into buying me the M rated game by assuring her I could turn down the violence/gore settings.
I played through the singleplayer - on easy because I was a newb - and suddenly remembered that article about TFC and hunted when they released the patch that included TFC 1.5.
My neighbor and I played for a month or two, mostly 2fort pubs. We weren't especially good (actually we sucked) but we'd gotten several offers to join a clan, so eventually I decided to accept the next offer anyone made to me. Soon afterwards, while I was playing some O soldier on 2fort, {GTO}Smitdog asked if I'd be interested in joining a clan...

i accidentally stumbled into a tfc server back in august of '99 when i was trying to play HLDM but got pissed off cuz the datacore server i played at was full. the first map i played was well. i was confused because i didnt realize that it was a different game from HLDM... i guess i thought the server had more options or something? i dunno. 2 months later i made a clan and tried to get as many members as i could to join.. (since i didnt know the purpose of the clan, i just wanted to have lots of people join) so i got like 110 people to "join" my clan [FB-x] (not sure if tehy just added the tag and took it off when i left). not many of them play anymore i dont think.. but blink was in it, as well as audixe, and so was whitetrash but he stopped playing like 2 years ago i think.
oh yea and i played on a 200mhz p2 with a monster 3d card

1.4 predates when I started playing. 1.5 was the big patch that changed concs, and that was around or before September 2000. You're probably thinking of either 1.8 which is the patch that capped bhop, or 1.10 which was the patch right before STEAM blew its load on our collective faces.

My dad used to play right when TFC came out, and I always used to watch but was usually too scared to play, lol (i wasn't real old at the time)..Then our 56K became too much to bear as ours was even worse than average. I live in central Indiana, and about 1.5 to 2 years ago we finally got DSL(it was just made available in our area). I believe the first map i played was warpath, i think i sniped but not sure.

I'm sure it was late 1999 when I first tried TFC. I had been playing HL and somehow stumbled upon a website that talked about TFC. So, I got setup and joined the fastest, most active server (there was some option to do so in WoN). Anyways, I find myself on 2fort on the blue team. I went soldier cause I thought the solly looked cool. I didn't know about jumping or the need for speed so I just leisurely left the fort to go across to the enemy fort. I made it somehow and ended up slowly inching my way down to the flag room. I had read enough that I knew I needed to steal the flag and 'cap' it (whatever that meant, lol).
I'll never forget slowly moving towards the flag room. Meanwhile I saw our own players running in (scouts I believe) and then hearing this horrendous series of explosions and what sounded like someone dying. I remember actually being afraid to poke my nose into the flagroom, lol.
I eventually made it to the flagroom and saw a red solly there. He saw me and I bolted to the flag. The next thing I know I'm being bounced around by his rockets and was very quickly dead. I never fired a shot I was so surprised.
Ah... memories...

saw my cousin play it, thought it had the greatest graphics ever. this was the first computer game i ever saw btw lol. Later on his mom saw that i enjoyed it and got it for me for christmas.
I also remember seeing servers on the map rock2, everytime i tried to join it would say i needed more than 16mb of ram rofl. i was always so mad, i wanted to see what rock2 was like!
I always pub sniped. Id also see some people come in to a server and bhop/conc/rjump but i was never interested in learning any of that. I was like 11 so i loved to just explore maps or just snipe.

i dont remember my first time playing tfc.
i remember when i was a small kid, i was hooked on quake fortress. i would be on it all night. i usually played scout/med. i was really good, and i think people asked me to join some teams, but i didnt even know how to type back. i played this one map, a lot. it was a hunted map where you had to get the hunted onto this elevator. if the civi made it up all the way, you won. it was really hard, because all the snipers would spawn around the ele.
but the transition of qtf->half-life->tfc was so smooth, i dont remember anything.
edit: that map that i played a lot was, in fact, the first hunted. lol.

first class I played was sniper, then spy. It was probably over a week before I actually tried to grab a flag. I thought my main objective was to sneak up to the battlements and knife the snipers. Then for another week, I played demoman. I thought that yellow pipes were proximity mines, so I would drop like 8 of them on the bridge and then shoot blues at people.

First day i played on casbah (my favorite map of all time). Went scout since i liked the idea of nobody being able to hit you while capping the enemies prized flag.
And then jumping around hh concing and people going ????? how did he do that.
I didn't really know i was "HH" concing or what that meant untill i got filled in to some TFC etiquite?
:)
Then near the end of map i go sniper and get called cheater and banned.

Man, that map rocked. It was the first hunted but it was kind of broken because like you said, the hunted had to stand on a vator out in the open and raise high enough to win. At this point the snipers would rape him. Either that or the demoman man would toss pipes in the hole he had to go in and get blown up.
Also the map was screwed up because the blue hunted and the red bodyguards were no considered on the same team! So if a red medic tried to heal the blue hunted he would get infected! Or if the engy was a huge dick he would build a sentry in the hunted respawn and he would just die over and over....
But not to derail the thread I would have to say my transition was very noticeable. I played TF but not with QW. I was on Mplayer so when I started playing TFC although I knew all the classes and I did really well. (I got into the first ][ when TFC came out) I had never been on such things as IRC for games. I applied on the ][ webpage when they transfered to TFC. I found the webpage because it was one of the first servers up and they were recruiting.
Anyway, to cut this short. All my memories from TFC come from the early days with ][. Everytime I play TFC now a days it's like trying to get that first high back, but never quite making it.
I miss my first days.

i can't remember what year it was, but...my friend, ryan (kablammo), said i should definately get my hands on a copy to check out. i didn't get ontop of it right away, but later on in the year, i stopped by the art room during a lunch break or something and saw people playing it on the lab computers (the art teacher was an FPS nut). i got my turn on the lab computer, played 2fort against one other person, with tim (smellyrat) and ryan standing behind me...almost made my first cap ever...until i got sniped by the art queen sitting next to me.
i got around to asking some douche bag with broadband to dl a copy for me (even gave me a cd-key) because i was on dial-up at the time. but yea, i got around to playing tfc in it's majestic glory...i'm pretty sure my first time playing was while i was on rogerwilco. my first map was xover2. played soldier first, then fatty, then medic and sniper.

I accidentally clicked on auto update in half life. On dialup I waited what had to be at least 12 hours. when it was done I had this new game called TFC. I clicked the join server tab. 2fort loaded and I selected Medic then left respawn. First thing I saw was an engy building a gun, I was amazed and thought to myself...I want to do that! After a few days or so of playing I had to get more info on this game, and found some forums, met some people and had a blast playing. I was definatly addicted...just ask my ex-gf lol.
Im still playing when life permits and still having fun. Most of the time.
I must say this though...That has to be the best 16 bucks I ever spent.

It was about 3 years ago, and a person i knew from school ([PheaR]bates) sent me an avi (the one with the dido song). I loved what i saw, even though i didn't really understand any of it, so i decided to try it out.
My first, and for almost half a year, the only map, was 2fort and i played offensive soldier. I already instinctually jumped around, but couldn't bhop until some nice person took pity on me and showed me how it's done, late at night on shutdown. Those were fun times...

but about a week or two after i started playing i met rukkus on the Renovator server (i met megatron there to and Krakker)... ive played with rukkus for about 6 years now or however long this games been out.. been pretty fun met a lot of awesome people through my channel (you know who you are).. they are what kept me playing this game for so long..
