View Full Version : PS2 or not?

I know it's a little late, but i wanna get a ps2
I'd like to take a little census of the ps2 owners and see which games they find the most kick-assiest.

no fps games please unless they are fucking crazy awesome.

fighters are cool
RPG's are ok
Action/Adventure is my main thing
Sports are a close second (baseball)

If you want good fighters I still play Street Fighter Aniversary and Guilty Gear X2

The little I played of Devil May Cry before I let my bud borrow it was fucking awesome...

GunGrave and GunGrave: Overdose are also both awesome ( Short, but sweet )

id wait for ps3, its like right around the corner!

jabroni
April 3rd, 2006, 10:20 PM
resident evil 4
god of war
silent hill series ( i like 3 the most, but it ties in with the 1st one so either read the plot guide for it or play it first, 2 is the best stand alone though)
metal gear solid 2 and 3 (3 is best)

if you like hack n slash rpgs:

dark alliance 1 & 2
champions of norath and return to arms
lord of the rings: the two towers and the return of the king are both good as well. (the movie games)

if you can stand a game with low frames per second then shadow of the colossus is actually pretty good.

Shadow of the Colossus runs great on my PS2... and its also one of the best games ever released... my #1 recommenation for the PS2. And of course, the GTA series.

If you want the ps2 for what you listed, then go right ahead.

There are plenty of action games, ranging from the ever-so-popular Devil May Cry 3 to forgotten sleepers such as Shinobi.

Fighting games? We got chya too.
Ya like 2-D? Street Fighter? You basically have access to every Street Fighter made except for Street Fighter III and Street Fighter III Second Impact (but you can get Third Strike from the Anniversary Collection, but who cares?) Not to mention the already noted Guilty Gear X2 and a few more.
Ya like 3-D? Pick your poison from either Soul Calibur III (or II, i still like II better), Tekken 5, Virtua Fighter 4, and some others.

But RPGS?
Oh man, if you care at all about RPGS, PS2 is just for you! Backed by the powerhouse of Square Enix, you cant really go wrong with one of the Final Fantasys, a Grandia game, or any of Squares other sleeper hits. But it's not like SquareEnix is the only thing rockin in the RPG department. The PS2 is basically an RPG machine, full of rpgs ranging from the traditional turn-based style of Dragon Quest VIII to the strategyRPG hits from the Nippon Ichi series.

All this, plus you can also play pretty much any ps1 game made, and there are still some awesome ps1 games that are pretty friggin hard to put down.

I think I can safely say that as long as you're looking for these kinds of games (and maybe even a few more), the ps2 is right for you!

May is a god character and Bridget is my hoemboy. I'm glad to know somebody else in the free world still plays GGXX except for like, japanese people. >.<

3D fighters are still lacking I find. Soul Calibur is still way to spammy and DoA finally got it right on 360 but the single player blows.

P.S. I play Zappa and Axl

Here's my take on gt4:

If you like tweaking engine stats/shock ratios/ and everything to do with car/engine performance go for it.

But if you like the ricer race type games.. go for need for speed undergroudn 2 or something.

Gran turismo 4 can egt repititive after awhile once you get good at just basic race driving. Because the only reason you lose the race is because you make a mistake, not a random civilian car or police car chasing you and fucking you up.

God forbid you would actually try and play the 24hour nitshurberg (sp?) race not on B mode (pit/leader mode).

HeHe.

Midnight Club 3**

I know jack shit about cars, and I dont care for cars, but Underground 2 didnt really put me in "the thrill of street racing"

Hell, I actually felt like I was playing a regular racing game (i.e. Gran Turismo) in the streets because of the locked street courses.

GT4
Metal Gear Solid 1-3 (best non-fps action games ever)
Grand Theft Auto 1-3 (1 is still my favorite)
Resident Evil 4 is rent-worthy and has a few tight ass enemies and shit
IF you spring for online, get SOCOM Seals and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is also good
God of War
Prince of Persia 1-3
Timesplitters or Red Faction are probably the best fps' around
Mortal Kombat is alright as a fighting game

There's plenty more...ps2 has great games in every genre.

-Serialchilla-
April 6th, 2006, 01:05 AM
i have every RE for the 'cube, as well as all the MK games. Never had a chance to play MGS 2 or 3, or Devil May Cry 2 or 3 (althought concencus seems to say skip 2)

I played timesplitters 2 on the 'cube, single player reminded me a LOT of goldeneye, but the multiplayer was some hardcore seriously fun shit.

I just got silent hill 4 on my PC, and i wish i could use my nyko airflo USB controller that's a duplicate of a PS2 controller, just with fans so your fat sweaty hands dont get so sweaty, just fat. Anyway, the whole control scheme feels awkard as shit, and even though my gamepad SHOULD be compatible, it just fucking isn't for some reason. Good thing this game is a completely legal copy from a friend for free.

Someone said 3 tied into 1, and 1 is the only one i've played. It has ranked time and again on the "top games" posts (all 800907845789 of them) because it was so fucking creepy. So if 3 ties into it, i'm all 'bout it.

Edit - Hack n' Slash RPG type games are what i really really like, and usually cant stop playing. Except Diablo 2. Oh wow, new spells, new characters, new monsters. But all you do is point and click, just like the first one. Click a few more times if it doesnt die, click on a potion, click on a treasure box, click on the lesbian amazon's box. I like stuff like x-men legends (i have both for the 'cube), or secret of mana for the snes. The only "slow" RPG's i've ever really liked are Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire 3. I like wrestling games too, usually. Are the smackdown vs. raw games any good?

The only reason why I keep my ps2 =

PS2 Games
Final Fantasy Series
Chrono Series
God of War
SOCOM: Navy Seals Series
Ace Combat Series
Baldur's Gate Series

PS1 Games
Final Fantasy Series
Chrono Series
Colony Wars Series

It also plays ANY dvd

NFS:Most Wanted has free roam and is better for some things.

i still havent tried Most Wanted.

Like i said, im not a real racing fan. Hell, my favorite kinds of racing games are the kart racing games.

So after I tried Underground and Underground 2, I've completely given up on NFS and the "underground racing scene"

Although I keep hearing i picked the wrong time to jump ship.

Resident evil 4 is a must, The first devil may cry as well, that game is incredible. If you like rpgs final fantasy X is good as well as xenosaga (just my opinion). Grand turismo 3 is good for racing games.

:edit: dark cloud 1 & 2 are good hack n slash rpgs

I agree. SONY has been dropping the ball lately. I'm not sure why but when they asked me to do the O.A.R. concert with them to help promote MLB I knew they had serious problems. I HATE SPORTS GAMES!

I have to say this was probably a good descision on their part. I'm sure they will be using the same engine for new new game, and to make it a flagship launch they would really have to go back and build a new engine to compete with 360.

What do you define as a "hack and slash" rpg.

an rpg that doen't use turn-based fighting; I gotta have action, and not just in cinematic sequences

basically, like what i said before: Secret of Mana or X-Men Legends type stuff, where you have to fight in real time, but still retain most elements of an RPG (leveling, items, different party members, etc.)

also it was the polish version

Also play on closed bnet with ladder characters. Open bnet is hack city.

used to, but i dont really go anymore.

I need to find a site that updates new match videos daily, that used to be my thing last year in college.

Watching match videos.

i've got like, gigs of stuff from CvS2, MvC2, GGXX, 3s, SSBM, A3, SS2T, and a bunch of other odd games. (Hell i got match play from TMNT: Tournament Fighters, lol)

But as for actually playing, i need to get my skills back up in other games. Hell, i need to get an arcade stick first, lol.

I used to play CvS2 soo much that I had a caliss(sp) on my thumb from workin the dpad so much. Got it within the first 3 weeks i was playing the game, and had it up untl this year when the only guy on campus who ever played me in CvS2 left.

It's not that im great, but im like, one of those guys who's "the best on the block", and i go to school with a buncha punks. :/

Wow i am not worthy.

I look at the front page and what do I see?

DAIGO IN A3!

Daigo is my hero after my the infamous parry on Justin Wong at Evo2004, although if I remember right Daigo lost in the finals.

___

Anyway, Freakle. You fucking win again man, stop cheating so much. :P
Only question I have is, does this site ever update with some real obscure games? The thing I liked about the site i used to go to ( www.video-opera.com ) is that they would have some OBSCURE fighting games, such as Melty Blood (React and Act Cadenza), Rumble Fish, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and other stuff.

__________

Edit, I just watched the 2 daigo videos from absolution 2004.
Why the hell does Daigo have a mad psychic dp? lol.

again, good stuff, thanks for tellin me bout it freakle.

What games do you play btw? (I'll probably wind up making another fighting game thread now)

____________

Double edit.

God apparently answered my prayers. I happen to be up at 4 in the morning, look on that site, and what do i see?

15 new Melty Blood Act Cadenza Videos.

Hurray!!
