--Sidenote-- I've been meaning to talk about this for a while, but everytime I start typing, i basically start talking about the story, which i hate doing.

______________

So this is my real first experience in the Tales series. I played one fight in Tales of Symphonia with my friend, and we got raped in a boss fight (he wanted me to help him, but didnt really tell me what to do, lol), so needless to say I didnt know what to expect.

Needless to say, If i wasnt pleased (or completely appalled), I wouldnt be making my post, but my god I love this game.

Again, the one aspect that I think is the most important is what makes this game shine to me, the gameplay. Granted, I dont THINK the system has been refined or tweaked or anything, it looks like the other Tales games (i've actually seen the others played), but actually experiencing it myself has changed my outlook on it. I didnt really understand how a 2-d action rpg would work out, it just seemed kinda goofy from what I saw it, but playing it. Oh man is it fun. It's also nice that your AI partners arent retarded, as with some other action RPGS.

Another thing that stands out to me is the story. Now, considering the story itself isnt exactly new, the way it's presented keeps me hooked. By the way the story is presented, I almost feel as if i'm basicaly playing an interactive anime. Not one of those off the wall ones that make sense, but it's obvious Namco tries to catch your attention with the well-performed voice acting. The characters themselves actually help add points to the story, too. I dont know how many times I've played an RPG where when I'm not real interested in some or most of my party because I feel they are the most "rag-tag crew assembled", but it helps to (once again) have a game where all of your characters actually have a purpose and unique personalities and traits, no-matter how big or small.

The soundtrack is also good imo, but I wont dive too far into that simply because it's not monumental or earthshattering in any way that would make me rant and rave about it.

But last, and always least imo when it comes to games, is the graphics. Now, the actual graphics for the game are nice, and I like how they picked up (or always have, against I dont really know the Tales series) the concept of using 2-d sprites for diologue. They help to relay facial expressions and emotions during sequences, or more cleverly, through the lack of diologue. However, the one thing I dont like are the character models. I seriously think they look too cartoonish for the atmosphere of the game. Granted the game does have some lighthearted overtones and intentionally tries to be humorous, I actually think the models detract from the game because the look of them (to me) implies that they were trying to go for more of a "cartoonish" kind of humor instead of enuendos, puns, and randomness in humor.

__________

All in all, if you're a fan of the Tales series, if you're looking for a "different" kind of RPG to play, or if you were thinking about picking this up and are waiting for somebody to say good about it, I say you outta give it a shot. I'm pretty sure you wont be disappointed.

Suikoden games are some of my favorite RPGs. I've played 2,3, and now 5 (I skipped 4 since I heard it wasn't that great) and its probably my favorite RPG series. V is going pretty slow right now (as expected, from reading some reviews), but its supposed to pick up at some point. Maybe I'll write more about it once I get further in.

ive played almost all the american released tales games and I can say legendia is by far the worst... I am still playing it in on Chloe's character quest and the game is pretty bland... The battle system is probably the worst in all the tales games ive played as it is basically a button masher and magic is pointless in this game.

The story is beyond boring... thats all i can say...

This game has one huge upside though... the character development in this game is phenominal... its probably the only thing that is keeping me in this game right now, as i am interested in who the heck grune is... it didnt help though that the voice acting stopped after the main game was done and the character quests begun... Also did i mention this game is super long... not dq8 long but its getting there... I just want to finish this game because i have 3 unopened rpgs to play. Grandia 3, Suikoden 5, and Kingdom hearts 2...

And in regards to suikoden that series is more stale then the breath of fire series... 1 was good... 2 was the pinnacle of the series it is a gem... 3 and 4 totally were lackluster and horrible rpgs... I have heard that 5 brings the series back to its roots and is a gem... I'll have to wait until i play it though...

If you're not likin the battle system of Tales of Legendia, crack open Grandia III and give it a shot.

I dont think the system for ToL is so bad, but again, I havent really any other Tales games, so I didnt think it was bad that.

The games might be "stale" in a sense, but they make up for it in charm and fun. I personally found 3 to be a very good game.

I just finished Tales of Legendia, sorta.

Im onto those Character Quest things now, but i've seen credits! Therefore I think I can declare that i'm "done".

_____

So overall, I like the game.

The gameplay, which is the most important aspect to me in games (obviously) is good. It's not the greatest thing imo, and since I've never played the rest of the Tales series, I cant say how it compares, but i got a hell of alot more than I expected.

The story, which shadows the importance of gameplay to me, is actually the shining point of this game. The reason why I like the story, however, is mainly because of the characters. The actual story itself isn't anything ground breaking, although it's not your average story. However, the characters themselves basically make up the story with their own unique personalities, traits (and flaws), which is evident throughout the game in its entirety(sp), even through battle sequences. (YYEEAAHH!!..... >.< )

The one thing I still dont like about the game is the models. I personally never care about graphics, cause I have a trademark saying of "Graphics do not make a game good, they make a good game better", but the models just basically stood out to me the whole game. The thing I dont like about them is they kind of made me feel as if the game was trying to take the mood of the game a whole 'nother way. Other than the models, everything else was fine, in my opinion. Nothing bad, and nothing broken.

Last but not least, the sounds. The soundtrack isnt really monumental, but one thing I like is the use of music/sound, or the lack of in some places (something I learned about in my music in film class, lol). I think there are good events where there is a lack of music to bring out the mood or the tension during a few secquences in the game.
The other aspect of the sound, and the most important is the voice acting. Rock solid. This was the first game I've played in a while where the voice acting was so solid that not only does it help to bring out the characteristics of people and their mood or emotion during diologue, but so good that it actually helps you in battles. Normally when I've played an action rpg, i'd have to pay a little attention to everything because of the lack of actual communication between the characters on field, but I dont know how many times I was able to drop back and save a mage because they were crying about something something actually attack them. Works a hell of alot better than obscure yells that dont really help you figure out what's happening off screen.

All in all, I say this game is atleast worth a borrow, or maybe a buy-return to Rhino. I dont know how much extra stuff is in the game (yet, cause I'm currently doing it), so I dont know if it's enough to actual hold on to the game for a while, but i would venture to say it is cause I have a feeling that there is actually a new game + on here.

Needless to say, Tales of Legendia gets my approval.

nope no more voice acting during the story scenes... maybe thats why im not feeling this game anymore... but these character quests are very deep and give awesome backstory into everybody... One bad thing about these character quests is that you will be re-visiting every old dungeon town etc... yes that means you get to relive the hell known as the forest of no return and the waterways all over again!!! I still have 2more character quests to go... I am mainly interested in grune and her backstory because they dont tell us jack about her... I am positive they are saving her for last... sigh... also the game gets slightly harder from now on... i actually died to a regular monster those stupid type divas with their spells... and bosses have ridiculous amounts of hp

have fun!!!

damn.

Well, there goes half of the fun right there.

The voice acting made the story. :/
