has anyone tried this trend in photography? from my understand, the concept involves combining several photos of the same scene at different exposures. i also read this technique is commonly used for indoor shots to get a more detailed photo unattainable with one exposure.
i came across this website on digg.com and thought id share and see if anyone else has experimented with this yet.

there is other software that creates a less lame look than the HDR function. IMHO people end up going to far with it and make it look not natural, in my opinion it should look like a normal photo with FUCKING CRAZY DYNAMIC RANGE not omfg go go contrast everywhere..... not sure, i'll find that other software and repost.

I've messed around with it before... it is cool sometimes but what the dude aboveis doing is going too far.
I would go so far as to say those are really bad photos from the fact that they are even in tone all over because of the dynamic range.

Sorry, but I think those images look tight as hell.
I can see how photography fundies might say OMG ABOMINATION to those, but I love them. I find them very coloristic and painterly. They seem almost Fauvist to me, except of course that they are in urban settings. I'd like to see what this technique would do in a natural setting.
Then again, on second view, the last two almost seem like Super-Realist paintings with their crazy high-contrast emphasis on every detail.
They have no understatement whatsoever, and I admit understatement has its place. But subtlety is not a value in and of itself.
senor, after reading your comment again I see what you mean about the overall tone being flattened. I agree, but I still like these quite a bit.

I just wish it wasn't being used like a fucking photoshop filter though, there are some great uses for it, but surely not applying it to any shitty photo you take, that would be like me HDRing every shitty photo I post here. Now the photos done with HDR that bring the dynamic range up to 15-20 stops, using multiple exposures of 1/3 stop increments all the way acrosss the spectrum and then HDR mapped, that shit is cool. I replicated this HDR mapping shit in photoshop about a year ago, before I remember seeing it here, if anyone remembers, looking back, they look like shit. lol.
I want to try some REAL HDR stuff.

I don't want to go as far as to say they look horrible, but that's the first word that came to mind. I tried to see what people thought looked good about them, but I can't seem to find anything worthy of praise. At best, they're over-saturated and have far too much contrast (and the only image I would say could achieve that "accolade" would be the stairway photo). At worst, - and in case there is any confusion, I lean toward "worst" in this case - they're an example of a new Photoshop user experiencing filters for the first time: I'm sure you know what damage can be done. Ugly, ugly photographs.

exactly, no functional reason why this is being used in these pictures other than for the sake of using it.
