View Full Version : 5 on 5 OGL style fun league
Dinosaur Gas

We've been running an in-house 5 on 5 league, OGL style ladder, for a few months now. Granted, the skill level is not on par with most of the "normal" leagues...pub server skill level at best. Teams consist of 7 players, and alternates are available when you can't field 5. Match dates/times are planned by team captains. Maps are also decided by team captains. We also have 2 teams play each week on "League Night", with set maps chosen by one of the league admins. Basically there are no rules that you would find in normal leagues. Spam, o vs o, yard d, spy/medic defense, etc. are all allowed. Bunnyhopping is disabled though, so that right there will probably turn most of you away. For those of you who might be interested, just sign up on our site and post in the TFC League section of our forums. Remember, this is not a formal league. It is purely for fun. More info on our site.
http://www.tfcgaschamber.com/league.php
P.S. You don't need to have a team to join the league. Individual players can join an existing team...or play as an alternate/mercenary/ringer.

I play on a team in this league and it's a good time. The skill level varies from VERY casual gamers who barely play all the way up to some people that would fit in very well in the TFC clanning community. Definitely worth a look..

If you ever have a question or need a hand with a hacking situation, don't hesitate to ask. I admire what you guys are doing and know how hard it can be at times.
Good luck and Godspeed

why woudnt you allow bhoping, anyone can learn it so i dont see it as an advantage?
This is just a question (NOT A FLAME) as im curious to your reasoning for disallowing something so common.
also are you saying that if i get 7 guys and signup my team, at any time later in the season you can take one of my team? If so i think i would have to pass on that.
Once again, NOT A FLAME, this is the first ive heard of it so i have questions to ask from how im reading your rules.
When there are enough players to make two or more NEW teams for the league, each team that currently is active must give up a player for a new draft. Obviously we can't just go and throw new players on two teams and call it a "team". We will have to work out a system where each team has to drop a player, and then re-enter the new draft half-way to replace the players they lost. I will not go into detail on how this will work until it needs to be explained. I will post it as soon as I need to.

I would say not everyone can learn it. and if there is no cap like the server we play on, a hw can get to the other teams fr faster than a scout if you are good at it. and he is hard as hell to hit. most people wont like that.
just IMO

Because some people like to play without bhop. Why is that so hard to understand? This has been discussed time and time again. Nice to see a group of people playing TFC how they enjoy it, and inviting others to give it a try if they so desire. GL.

Think dodgeball when you were a kid. There a are captains and a group of players. Those captains choose from the players until each team has seven players on it. Whoever is left becomes an alternate.

The reason it is "so hard to understand?" ( ) is because bunny hopping is as much a part of TFC to me as rocket jumping, or priming grenades. To me, it's just another part-of-the-game skill. It may have started as an exploit, but it became part of the game when Valve capped it instead of removing it. So yeah, it's a little difficult for me to grasp why someone cuts out a legitimate part of the game.
On the flip side, yeah it's dumb to argue anyone can do it so everyone should, because like knox pointed out, anyone can download hacks.
Regardless, good luck with the league.

yeah, the "anyone can learn it" arguement is bad, but i just cant imagine no bhoppign in TFC. really slow concs since youre just walking into it, and soldiers would hit every rocket because u just walk in straight lines :(

*sigh*
And may I ask the last two posters a question on how they bhop?
Do you two fellows ONLY make a mouse movement while continually pressing one key or button to +jump?
Or do you use a continual +jump script, or continual mousewheel script bind? Or a type of combination of these? Meaning, without a .dll, etc, an outside the HL engine type of thing, that your bhopping is actually script helped.
Just asking, so I can "understand". :)
Edit* I ask this because, of course, there are many different 'ways' to play our game. I bring up bhop scripts or dlls, because after your answer(s), I will shortly poke fun at myself on how I play TFC.

I would rather not get into the "why don't we allow bunnyhopping" topic, as it will land this thread in the cesspool...as opinions on this subject differ greatly.
As far as your team goes. If you were to enter a 7 man team, we would allow you to keep that team intact. The current teams are made up of community members and regs...so there are no real "teams" in the league. We switch it up/redraft, to keep things interesting for our people. We would still do that for the other teams, but not for "outsiders" who bring their own team in.
**EDIT** All matches are played on our server, so you don't need to provide one. Our servers are located in Atlanta.

Well I like the idea that they don't allow bhing. What it does is gives the average joe who just plays for shits and giggles a chance to some what compete. I mean bhing gives the users such a huge advantage over people who can not. Removing it allows the casual player a better chance to compete therefore allowing the casual player to not be overwhelmed by the competition. It's nice to see people are still catering for the average joe.

I fully understand why you don't allow bhop. UGC had a no BHOP div (Iron) till season 4. This is a seperate community and they play with the rules that THEY want. I came from such a community, where everyone knew everyone else. We had "matches" with the other clans that were part of that community.
There are plenty of people here who would make a nice fit into your League. There are also alot of people who would not.
Don't let outsiders ruin what you guys are doing and have set up. Keep the game fun, that's what it's all about.

We can easily switch it back to solely in-house if needed. People who try to turn the league into something not fun can be easily removed as well.
People who are hardcore about this game won't enjoy the league. If your sole purpose is to "annihilate the noobs", you won't have fun.

That's cool, Thrash. I dislike pro-bhoppers that are scripted. Especially ones that may show disdain to other scripts, say a RJ.
Anyways, as Dinosaur, Shaggy, and Sparkle point out, enough about bhop or whatever, and GL to your mini league !

Please dont misunderstand my questions/comments, I have alot of respect for what you are doing i know it has to be hard, i was only trying to understand your point on view on why.
I also understand your reasoning for not discussing the 'no bhop' rule as your probably right (in hind sight) that it would be a huge cesspool overflow.
Rand i bhop by using mwheel to jump but no scripts anymore (as of about 5 days ago), yes i started out with a jump spammer +5 jumps or so and slowly worked it down to none.

I've been playing on the Quake engine for a decade and still can't bunnyhop. I know how, but just can't bring myself to let go of using "w" after all these years. I think the main reason is most D players, like me, rarely use it if they do at all. If I need to cut off a flag carrier I'll rj to a choke point and hold them there instead of trying to catch them by a wallstrafe + strafejump or bh'ing.

If I were to remove the anti-bop, and cap it at 1.7...would more teams join? This would be without the slowdown when you hit 1.7 though....not regular tfc style.
What if I were to make a separate division with bunny hopping enabled?

that would be very cool, I really enjoy playing on servers that run the anti-slowdown hook. Its how TFC should have been, no idea why valve thought it was smart to make you stop in your tracks when you hit 170%

If we can get at least 4 or 5 teams to start with, I can get it setup in no time. Same exact rules as the other league(basically none) with bunny hop capped at 1.7 with no slow down.

One thing I forgot to mention is that during matches the same mirror damage (shoot a teammate and it hurts you) occurs as it does in the public servers. Maybe that's another change that could be made?

I dunno, mirror damage seems like a relatively insignificant issue compared to bhop.
Also, if I'm understanding the situation correctly, the server matches are played on has the speed cap removed? Is this why bhop is not allowed? I realize the intent was to avoid a bhopping discussion, but I'm a little unclear on this point ;o
(Additionally, if you'll humor me, where do you draw the line between basic air control and bhop? How far apart do two jumps have to be to be legal?)
I'll do my own research after finals week, I wanna check out this and the UGC 2v2. If I can keep myself busy with enough TFC, I'll skip getting a job over the break :p

I'm pretty sure the match server (as well as the public servers) use an anti-bhop plugin, which restricts fov changes and drastically lowers the bunny hop cap. Bunny hopping itself isn't illegal as far as I know, you can still do it...you'll just go very slowly.
I don't know. As much as I would like friendly fire or nothing at all compared to mirror damage, it isn't too hard to get used to. I also play on their public servers often which makes it easy for me to adapt, but that's just me. As spammy and lawless as the matches are, it's also a more careful form of TFC, which isn't so bad...Of course, Dino could explain all of this much better than I can, I'm just giving you the point of view from someone who is active in the league.
Dinosaur Gas
May 1st, 2006, 07:25 PM
fov is not locked on the league server. It was on the pubs, but I just removed the block.
Hica is right about the plugin. It doesn't prevent you from bunny hopping, it just limits the speed you can attain through the movement.
As far as mirror damage goes, when you play on a noob friendly server, mirror damage can be your best friend. When "Player" comes on the server and decides that he is colorblind, he'll just kill himself. For those who say just disable it alltogether, noobs can still shoot you around, i.e. off the battlements...etc. Mirror damage forces you to watch where you throw the nades/shoot your rockets, etc...or you risk taking the damage.
