What would be a really good beginner's camera (preferably digital)? One that can take professional looking photos and isn't TERRIBLY expensive. I know I'll be shelling out a large chunk of change no matter what if I want a nice camera, but if you know of a nice one on the lower end of the expensive spectrum, the sharing of your knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

1st: Canon Digital Rebel XT
2nd: Nikon D50
3rd: Olympus Evolt E-500

I put the E-500 in third place due to the low quantity of available accessories, even though it has better image quality than the D50. The D50 has a very reasonable price (usually around $500-$600), while the Rebel XT has the best image quality of the bunch (as you can see in the review). I've used both the Rebel XT and D50, and have to say that while I enjoy the familiar interface on the D50 (until recently, I've used a Nikon film SLR), the Rebel XT's image quality and body style win me over. It's around $800-$900. I've never used the Olympus: I don't sell it where I work for some odd reason.

D50 is build even worse than the original rebel, go for the XT, it is one hell of a camera for the price.

Yes, I've noticed that myself. I generally don't like the D50. The image quality was lacking and the body design was uncomfortable. However, it's pretty cheap, and does a decent job for the price. However, I do agree that the Rebel XT blows it out of the water every which way, and I would definitely choose it if I were to purchase a camera in that category. Sure, it's a couple hundred dollars more, but it's worth it. You're not going to get another camera as good as it so close to the entry level price.

for only 100-200 more you can also pick up a 20D or 30D body only.
