I just got a laptop recently and this touch pad is driving me nuts. What would you guys suggest for a mouse? Optical? Laser? What kind?

i use a logitech mx510 optical gaming mouse (fairly popular among gamers)
however i'm told laser mice are more precise so it really depends on how you are going to be using the laptop. for simple college papers/internet/AIM just go with a basic 20$ logitech optical that should last you a while. if you are gonna be playing TFC on the laptop i would recommend the mx510 or one of the laser mice although i dont have personal experience with those

or for 12$ more you can get the G5 which looks pretty sweet

I got some wireless Logitech Cordless Click! optical mouse for my work latop. Just need a USB port for the little receiver thing. Battery life is tremendous. I've had it since January 2005 and have changed batteries once.

For tfc I've always been a huge fan of the mouseman dual. It has two optical sensors for MAXIMUM PRECISION! Very simple and sexy... I used to rock the mx510 but it was too much of a handful for me.

get a wireless mouse, it's all you'll need if you plan on using the laptop strictly for non-gaming.
I have an mx518, which is somehow supposed to be better than the mx510 (had one, dont see the difference). It's great for gaming, and the extra keys are great for reassigning functions such as copy/paste, browse forward and back, and app switching. However, it is a wired mouse so i don't think i'd enjoy it with a laptop.

yeah me too. and i have a laptop but not with a touchpad, but a trackpoint. i use the old 2 button w/ a scrollwheel logitech optical. but i mean a mouse is a mouse. whichever one you want to use, go for it. having a laptop or a desktop doesn't matter unless you're worried about using it in random places. then get one of those small ass wireless ones that is easy to take anywhere. otherwise, get a mouse that you're comfortable with.

I use the Logitech G5 laser mouse and let me tell you this:
It is the best mouse i've ever owned. You can adjust the weights in it, you can adjust the DPI setting for the laser.
I play TFC with 1 sensitivity and crank the DPI on my mouse to 2000 and it feels like im using 10-14 sensitivity, it is nuts. You can change the DPI settings on the fly by just pushing a button on the mouse. It is a little spendy, mine was free as a present but i think they normally run around 60-80 bucks. I highly recomend it

I dunno, I've used a Logitech Wingman ball mouse for 5+ years now, and have loved it. I guess I'm looking for something similar in shape, these mx5xx's feel weird, I mean I guess I could get used to them...
What about Razer? How do you guys feel about those mice?

currently i have a mx518 on a black icematv2.
great setup
i dont really have a use for the extra buttons around the mwheel but the side thumb buttons and right/left click work fine... might take a few days to get used to the mouse weight/shape

Completely agree. The G5/G7 is the best mouse hands down. I loved my MX500 though as well. Great for gaming.

Logitech does a great job with simple and great mouses, I prefer one. I also prefer one that is optical yet is not wireless. I had an experience with a wireless and it seemed a little less precise, I suppose an expensive one wouldnt have a problem but it depends on what you prefer. Wireless - battery, no cord : Wire - no battery, cord.

i can't really justify it either, i just like a corded mouse on a desktop even though the cord can get in the way sometimes
I guess it's a case of "leave well enough alone" for me.

When the drivers/software worked, I thought the mouse was amazing (referring to the Razer - Diamondback model), however, both of them were terrible and I couldn't get them to work correctly for the life of me. They may have been updated and actually work well now, I'm not sure because I replaced mine with a Logitech MX 518 awhile back. I love this mouse.
But, yeah, if the drivers and software are more stable now, I'd recommend the Razer mice, because, as I said before, it was an amazing mouse when it worked.

I use this mouse for my regular desktop setups. My laptop has a small wireless optical mouse, which is awesome for work and portable work.
