View Full Version : Advice on a kitten

I have a kitten and I'm trying to break him from the urge to bolt out of the apartment door. I live in a very small apartment in NYC, he's fully explored my room so he's very eager to see the other side of the door. I've been using a spray bottle, which only works when I have it. Any time I don't have the bottle he might make a run for the door. I've tried a bunch of methods, such as flicking his nose, spray bottle, making loud noises, et cetera, but nothing seems to work. He's pretty fucking determined. My room gets stuffy if I do not open the door and air it out from time to time, so it's a problem.

Also, he's 3 months old, not very big on cuddling, just wants to fight and run around constantly, is that normal? Do cats become more friendly as they age and after being spade? I try to play with him all the time to spoil him, bought him a ton of toys because he is so rowdy, but he's wearing me out.

Thanks.

Wait til he gets tired and then pick him up and let him sleep with you. My sisters old Himalayan(sp?) cat was like that for several months. Just kept picking it up while it slept and held it as i took a nap or whatever. Seemed to work after a couple months. Granted I don't live in NY anymore but when I did see her she used to come up to me to cuddle.

As for the darts for the door, no idea. It's gonna happen sooner or later, as friends or family will forget you have the cat and just hold the door open as they walk in. Then you gotta go chase the little fucker around for hours.

Yeah, kittens go fucking crazy. We took ours home hours after her neutering surgery thing (approx 16 weeks old) and once the anesthesia wore off she was going buck wild (when we're supposed to keep her immobile and shit so the stiches don't tear or whatever).

Anyway, we haven't had her an entire year yet, but she has tamed down some. She'll still just start going crazy randomly (flying around the apartment from room to room up/down her 'cat trees') whereas othertimes she's really nice and will lounge all over you and/or anything near you.

Ours will try to run out the door occasionaly but usually stays back since we're used to blocking her w/ legs/items (grocery bags).

You could try taking yours out for a walk or something (we do but it ends up being more of a stand around in once place holding the leash while the cat sniffs everything).

We've also got a deck thing on the apartment and if it's not ridiculously hot outisde we'll leave the back door open and she'll just sit out there for hours (literally) watching birds/squirrels/anything else out there... she hasn't tried to jump off yet or jump to the rail and then to the roof (which she could easily do).

Probably normal for a young animal. My dog used to be insane when she was a puppy. Now she's 6 and is generally quite calm. Pretty well trained for the last few years too.

Hell I doubt you were able to sit still when you were a kid ;).

its pretty normal for the kitten to be all pyscho that young, since all they are is full of energy, they will wear u out. They will calm down eventually, my one cat is somewhat pyscho even after 6 yrs, really depends on the cat. spend alot of time with him/her, def use the spray bottle and say no etc(dont do anything physical to it as it might take it the wrong way, maybe alittle tap but thats it)

My girlfriend brings here two cats over all the time and my condo has a lanai(mines screened in) so they go out there for 80% of the time like mulch said, watch birds, ppl, etc and love it. having 2 helps so he doesnt feel lonely and they play with each other etc but thats my opinion.

After a while (it may take up to a year really) he will stop trying to break out and actually be more frightened of the outside. With every cat I've had I can just leave the door open and they'll look down but the second they see someone coming in or out they'll run back in. Just don't leave it open too long without notice or curiousity might get the best of him.

my 2 cats did the exact same thing. they are now 7 or 8 years old and whenever my dad or i are outside, we let them roam around. usually they get board and go back in by themselves after about 30 mins. but when they were young, it was a bitch to get them to come back inside. we have a ton of huge bushes that they would hide under and it sucked to fish them out (i always had to do it -_-). just give it time.

The best advice i have on what to do with kittens would be to cook over low heat, and use lots of teriyaki sauce.... :D

You can not keep them from the door. They know it's there, and they want to go through it...Good luck..Try hanging a sign on both sides of the door to close it quickly, cause if the cats get out, your guest has to catch it...

They will mellow with age, but it's a long process.

good cat site for your amusement:

PS I laughed at those pictures because that looks like a cat I have and your description matches how this one acts..btw it's 4 or 5 now and still crazy. it tries to get outside all the time.

my dad's older cat was pretty psycho when she was a kitten. She would sleep most of the day, and start flipping out in the evening on into the late hours of the night, pretty much nonstop.

Good example, might have posted it before-

Cat is flying through the house like a bat out of hell, which is pretty funny to watch. The cat decides to try to make me shit my pants from laughter, and almost succeeded. She tore through the hall, slammed on the brakes in the living room, then charged directly across the room, onto and on top of the couch, where she smashed face-first into the wall behind the couch with a *THUMP*, slid down the couch, got back up, lost her balance and fell off the couch, then got up after a few seconds and started running again

Me, my dad and my stepmom couldn't stop laughing for like 5 minutes straight. It was so awesome.

So um, yeah it's normal for a kitten to freak out and run around like a retard on meth

the joys of having 7.5 acres of woods is that our cat can do whatever he wants. Scratches to get in like a dog when he becomes bored with the outside world. Pretty cool cat.

Generally speaking, male cats will piss everywhere they walk if they are not snipped. Get it done at the earliest possible moment.

Unless you like having to clean your carpets to get the smell of cat piss out of them...

I trained my male cat that hasnt been nutered to use the catbox (aka shitbox :P) at really young age, 6 months, and he does all his business in there and stays really clean.

Maybe im just luky. The only problem is that he thinks everbody that enters the house their ankle/wrists are a chewtoy.

Probly need to drug him up on some more catnip.

i live in a condo, i walk my cat daily, he is just like a dog, he knows the words "walk" and "out". sometimes when i open the door, he tries to rush out, i just make a hissing noise (like fighting cat sounds and stuff) he backs off rather quickly. really cool looking cat though :D

Do you have any friends with large dogs? I know my best friend's cat won't go outside anymore after he had his friends rotweiler stand outside the door and bark like mad.

edit
oh it was a glass door and the kitten could see the dog going ape shit outside, and it probably doesn't hurt that the neighbors next door have a couple big dobermans.

i love my kitty, he's about 12 years old and he's the best. when i sit at the couch, he jumps up on it and headbutts me, so now i just bend down and he always does it. if you keep a tone of voice when you talk about "going out" or "treat" or say the same word over and over again, your cat will recognize it, mine does. i think my cat has only scratched me once, he's the bestest ever.

My wife is a vet so that makes me a KITTEH expert! This is how I cured the cats of wanting to go into the garage. I left the door open and the youngest one went running out under my truck. I walked out and layed on the horn. She bolted for the house and hasn't been in the garage since. Trama for the win!

We play the "stalk" game here. She's down at the end of a long hall and I'm at the other end. I poke my head out and pull it back in. She notices and will essentially engage in red-light green-light. Each time I poke my head out she'll stop mid step and just pause and then you pull your head in and she'll continue moving. Repeat until she gets to me or I move back further to extend the game.

Pigeons idea of picking it up when its tired is excellent. I lucked out wiht my kittens as they were all generally super friendly since birth, but I can guarantee that over time thats your best option to make the little bugger friendlier.

Having multiple cats my whole life, they ALL want to try to get out at some point forever. Its just in their nature to explore, and I dont think you can really solve that problem. If you really need to air out your room or something, either lock the cat in the bathroom or get a cage or something. Just make sure that you never ever ever leave the door open for any period of time, and yell at your friends when they do it. Keep throwing the cat away from the door I guess. Maybe distract it with a catnip ridden toy while you leave the door open.

edit: oh, and for the love of god keep playing with him. Never neglect him or he'll be very upset and pretty much display his emotion. His rowdyness is just his unique personality that might not ever change, but as long as hes happy - you'll be happy.

Well i guess this would be a good thread to post in.

What is a good way to teach a pet to familirize (spelling LOL?) to certain words to certain actions.

I.E.

time to take a walk
time to play
time to chill out and leave me in peace for a few minutes :P

and any other general actions.

Is there like real training tips/ways to do this, besides just saying no/discouraging them badly at things you don't want them near.

Yeah cats arnt dogs (slaves to the master) but it doesnt hurt to have them a bit trained.

And damn, i need to get a picture of my cat on my comp. :)

Here are my cats, the darker chubby one is about 4 and the orangish one is about 16 (yea he's gettin old!). Needless to say, he wasn't too happy about us getting another cat, especially a young female. The picture here with both of them is the closest they've ever layed down together, they get along ok, play fight everyday and he tries to avoid her but she intices him to play, its good for him, keeps him acting younger. And they both go outside a lot of course, a couple weeks ago she brought a live rabbit into the house, but my older cat doesn't go after animals anymore, i guess they grow out of it.

I really miss my parent's old cat, he was like the freaking Jack Bauer of cats. Usually really nice to us, but always a badass mofo to anything else. My mom adopted him after he wandered down from the hills behind her school. I swear he was half mountain lion. Seriously, he was huge. Vets, Mailmen, etc were always startled when they saw him. He flat out pwned all the other cats in fights. When my parents went for a walk, he would follow them around the entire block. His block. Rawr. I mean he freaking fought a huge coyote and won. (the super thick leather neck collar did save his life though... big ol' teeth marks in it :-x) I think the only time he really hurt me was when I carried him into my room and tripped on a jar of coins that I had stupidly left on the floor. He freaked out and ripped my arm to shreds with one swipe - five slashes and a thumb poke! I still have big scars from it. The animal police or whatever they are wanted to put him down after they saw the hospital report. Bah. Screw that. It really sucked how he ended up dying though... he was fighting a big owl on the roof and it pecked him hard on the cheek. He was fine that night but a few days later it got really infected. The vet said it was some weird ass disease and the medication for it cost a fortune. My dad bought a few doses but it just wasn't going away. The cat was doing moderately ok but then it got pretty ugly and you could tell he was in alot of pain. He died on the way to the vet's to be put down.

What i'm thinking about doing for a "birthday present" at 1 years of age, is to buy one of those .50c pinky feeder mice you see in stores for snakes. (I have a snake that eats feeder fish and other things :D )

Thats a cool ass cat kersk.

If reincarnation was real, I'd definitely want to come back as a house cat. They can do anything, run, jump, climb, squeeze through tight spaces, swim if they need to, fuck stuff up with claws/teeth. And they are clean and smarter than dogs.

Having a few cats is cool, we used to have 22+ but we're down to 15 and two kittens. I wanna try to get some pictures of them playing in the cereal boxes.

Mine loves the Killians 12 pack box. I open up one side (to get the beer out of course) and she can get in through that side and then poke through the handle holes.

She likes a stand up laundry hamper too and will sit on the side of it reaching through the holes at her crinkly ball thing.
