View Full Version : Am I the only one disappointed in EVO this year?

So I go to the EVO site to look at the main event games for this year.
http://www.evo2k.com/

and after about a years worth of ranting and raving after the last EVO, what do i see?

Tekken 5, DOA4, and .... Mario Kart DS?

Now lets start with Tekken.

Dont get me wrong. As much as I hate Tekken, and as much of a personal vendetta I have against Tekken, i'll never say it is a skill-less game. However, I absolutely hate the fact that namco goes through the trouble of making a movelist of 100 or so moves, and when you actually play Tekken (i dont mean dick around and try to be flashy, i mean PLAY tekken), you wind up using about 5/6 moves, the size of a Street Fighter command list. Now, throw in the fact that skill in Tekken is not only based on your ability to play a high/low mixup game, but also how well you can continue a juggle (which is completely unescapable once you've caught the juggler), and i just want to know how the heck this gets to be an event game over something like a King of Fighters or Soul Calibur 3 (ok maybe not soul cal 3, but there's gotta be osmething else)

Now onto game number 2, Dead or Alive 4. One big f'n counter fest. Enough said. Now, I havent personally played Dead or Alive 4, so maybe i'm jumping the gun. So if i am, somebody please feel free to tell me if Tecmo has somehow nerfed the fact that beyond juggles (which again, are unescapable once you've been hit), are there any real combos in the game? I ask that cause last time I checked, a combo was a chain of hits in which you have no chance of recovery inbetween hits, otherwise the string is a chain.
So, the way DoA works, is that all the characters have a crapload of string commands, because you can break practically every stun animation with an attempt to counter. Yeah you have 3 choices, but it basically comes down to a game of rock-paper-scissors for every attack thrown at you.

And then mario kart ds. Dont get me wrong, Mario Kart DS is frickin sweet. The best Mario Kart to come around since Mario Kart 64, and coulda blew that outta the water easily if nintendo had some more/better tracks (Am I the only person who thinks there shoulda been a Rainbow Road cup?), but seriously. EVO's a fighting game tournament. Mario Kart DS outta be on MLG with Halo and Melee, or they shoulda made it a side event game.

____________

Maybe it's just me

Maybe i'm just upset that the two of the three fighting game series I hate the most are now main events at EVO (I would have gone crazy of Mortal Kombat made it.)

Whadda you think?

DoA is retarded, but tekken is a must. tbh there is nothing i would rather have replace tekken since they have sf, cvsnk2, gg, and marvel.

like i said, as much as i passionately hate tekken, i can understand why that's up there.

But DoA4 completely blows my mind when they still have MvC2.

I get a feeling there might be an xbox360 conspiracy. Only reason I say that is cause MvC2 will be played on dreamcast (only major game that still is played on dreamcast), and they dont wanna get another ps2 game. (or ds, lol)

what he said.

I'm just mentioning the 2 main events i dont like, and completely asking wtf about mariokart ds.

But yeah, CvS2 is there, so is GGXXr, and MvC2, 3s, and the HSFII (or whatever it's called; the big megamix on SF: Anniversary Collection)
