Laptop briefcase or backpack

I am having much controversy over which to get. I got a brand new laptop for college, and it was quite pricy, keep in mind I want good protection. The briefcase is smaller and easier to use, but less extra storage and I might look like a flamer with the strap on. The backpack is much larger, more space, and I figure it could hold some books and stuff, and I wouldn't look like a flamer. The pack is about $20 more. But I still want to know what you prefer and why, ups/downs are appreciated.

whenever i carried my laptop around at college i used my backpack. i only used the carrying case it came with for transporting it in my car.

i'd use a backpack if i were you, only because i wouldn't want to look like a douche anymore than i already do.
