do you have a Serial ATA supported motherboard? If you do then the hard drive you selected is fine.

A serial ATA port on a motherboard looks like this:

I have a7n8x-e from a couple years ago im not sure if it supports it. But price wise is it a good deal?

Price wise, its a great deal. But you better check and see if your motherboard supports SATA 1.5 or more... Or you will have a big hard drive and no way to use it.

The a7n8x delux has SATA ports, so I'm going to guess the "E" verision does as well.

Storage Controller Type(s) Serial ATA x 2, DMA/ATA-133 (Ultra) x 2

You should be OK with that drive but you won't get full performance out of it.
It's a SATA2 drive and you have a first gen SATA MB.

But it should work, someone correct me if I'm wrong..

Anyone verify this? Janus? Don't worry I still have about 6 days before I can order it because the funds are just going into my paypal account now.

Last I saw SATA2 drives were backwards compatible.

Janus

should be backwards compatible, they all are AFAIK.

Q:Will my new SATA-II drive work on my SATA-1 controller (and vice versa)?

SATA-II drives are backwards compatible with SATA-1 controllers (and vice versa, SATA-II controllers are backwards compatible with SATA1 drives).

NOTE: Some 3Gbp/s SATA-II drives require a jumper setting to force them to run at 1.5Gbp/s or else some issues may arise. Some owners of 3.0Gbp/s drives may experience problems however as some older 'SATA-II' drives (when 'SATA-II' was first released) require a firmware flash of their drive (in which case the manufacturer will need to be contacted). These issues arose as a result of manufacturer's bridging chip and firmware conflicts.

Yeah on a Socket 478 mobo i just bought a few weeks ago, i had to set the jumper to get it to work. But after that it was awesome.

How do I set the jumper?

If it's by itself, set it to master, otherwise set it to slave. Unless you're using it as the main hdd and the other one as the second, then it's vice versa.

No, You have to set another jumper other then the Master/Slave. If you look on the hard drive, it will have a diagram of how it should look if you need it to be SATA 1.

Oh, shit, I didn't even really read the thread. Sorry, don't listen to me. I had no idea you were talking about running it at 1.5mb/s. :(

So it arrives, and here I am, confused as to what to do so.. I try my best and disconnect one of my dvd roms I rarely use (because there werent enough power "ports") I get that all connected then I attach a SATA port with a cord I had from the original mobo box. And thats it. I need help setting up up with either my "jumper block thingy magicgy" OR/AND help setting it up in my bios (It only shows auto detect IDE) so I dont know where the SATA is. If any of you guys here want to help me out ill be in #thecatacombs that would be great. I'll be under the tag Unite|Grover Thanks again.

Or if your willing to help give me some way, any way to get in touch with you skype vent ts msn yahoo aim..... I really want this thing done.

it should show up. do you want to have it boot to it/format it with the xp cd? have you updated your bios?

dakine`

I just want it for the slave for now and when I get a new computer I just want to format and start clean with that new hd. And the with updating bios, I'm reluctant to flash it because if I mess it up then I wont have a computer. But I think it is bios that is the problem.
