Yeah so I recently reformatted. Not intentionally, actually, but reformatted nonetheless. Anyways, this old bastard is running 10x better, except now it freezes when I leave it idle. Sometimes just minutes after leaving it alone, sometimes after a few hours. It never freezes when I'm doing active stuff on it. Any idea what could be causing this/what could fix it?

My guess is the memory is fudged up, but it could be something else. Make sure your case isn't full of dust and stuff. Also, Did you do a quick reinstall? or a Full Reinstall?

full install of windows 98, upgraded to xp. It could quite possibly be a memory issue, since the motherboard/ram combo is 8 years old and pc133 is sortve extinct :/. Why would this happen after a format, though? Before my computer sucked completely and had the blue screen of death often, but never really any freezing issues.

upgrades are never good. what processor are you using? also, have you tried using memtest, that may help point in the right direction.

lol, go back and do a full install. Just save all of your files and stuff to a CD first.

I couldnt even get 2000 to upgrade to xp correctly. I strongly recommend you do a fresh install if possible.

if valve hadn't done away with won-net, we all could still play tfc on such a machine, without all the lag issues we are plagued with today.. pretty sad if you think about it.. :)

Actually depending on the setup, a computer of that age is capable of playing HL mods with a relatively stable frame rate.
