lesson to be learned here..
if you are going to back something publically, you better know the drill. otherwise, you will look like a total fool when someone comes and calls and makes you recite the litany.. this guy is just vote getting.. doesn't believe a word of what he says.. total tool.

He looks like a little kid being quizzed by the pastor.

Aww, c'mon, it's easy to pick apart someone who's being made to look like a buffoon intentionally. Nobody sits down with Colbert and thinks they're going to have (or give) a serious interview; the days of true "guerrilla-journalism" a'la Ali G. are long past. I say kudos to the fellow for being self-effacing enough to even do the interview.
"So, you'd like to take back things you've admitted to." Priceless.

oh come on.. i mean, the 10 commandments.. how many people have had them drilled into their heads during catechism or bible study in their early teens? And a guy that is leading the way to new laws in regards to their use can't even recite them? Please..
no, don't give him a break.. better yet, just give this guy a dunce cap for being an idiot..

Still, I think that we owe the Rep. at least the benefit of the doubt, as he's purposely put himself into the lion's den. There's no way of knowing whether or not he did actually fail- there's a fair bit of editing throughout, and especially at the end.
There is an expectation of mischief on that show, is all that I'm saying, and I like a good sport better than some member with a stick up his ass, whatever side of the aisle they're on.
Colbert never claims to be "Fair and Balanced". Just more "Truthy". :p

Oh c'mon, Veek. He most likely appeared on the show because one of Colbert's producers spoke with one of his staffers, who in turn thought it would be a fun idea. I doubt Westmoreland could recognize Colbert's schtick, especially if this was filmed prior to the White House Correspondent's dinner.
A lot can be done in editing, but this would have to be brilliant performance. You would need D. Hoffman-caliber skills to pull off this sort of amiable, vacant-eyed, moron Congressman. I've suspected most of the editing goes to intercutting Colbert's pre-canned reaction shots. Anyway, are you suggesting this guy got more than three of the commandments? Or that he was "playing along"? I kind of suspected such a thing when Colbert interviewed Barney Frank, but then I later read no fun was had.
I did like Westmoreland's answer about abolishing the department of education.

You can't really fault him. Colbert didn't specify which of the ten commandments.

I think its a safe assumption that it would be the christian interpretation of the 10 commandments ;-)
