earlier today i did something and i don't know what, but i was closing a bunch of excess crap that was running (refer to the load of icons in picture) to better my virus scan speed. that something was somehow go rid of the wireless taskbar icon, which makes it 10x easier to repair my wireless connection than using the adjacent green linksys piece of crap that can connect but never as well.

that icon right there, i just would like to know how to get it back, because i just even relented to a system restore (of a whopping 2 hours) to get it back because i couldn't figure it out. so if it gets removed from the taskbar again, where do i find it or how do i get it back! the big problem is when i reboot my computer, it wasn't there. when you first start my computer it hooks up to my old 11mbps router, instead of the new wireless G one which makes it impossible to stay connected for more than 30 seconds, so i usually just use the repair feature of the icon mentioned.

so BASICALLY: how do i get the wireless taskbar icon back if i make it 'disappear' by accident again!

If your Control Panel is in Classic View, then:

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

Your wireless connection should be listed there, you can right click and get all kinds of options; enable, status, properties, et cetera. Once you are connected to that connection, then it should automatically show up in your system tray.

If your Control Panel is in Category View, do the same thing, except at the beginning it's:

Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections

what's the equivalent of msconfig in 2000/XP? could it be toggled on/off from there?

msconfig is still the system configuration utility in 2000 and xp. If, in the Services tab, you unchecked "Wireless Zero Configuration", then I think it might stop the icon from appearing in the taskbar. not positive though...so check it out and let us know.
