Ethernet Port

So this is my second issue of the day. When I was on vacation my sister informed me there was a bad storm and when i got home my ethernet port wasnt working. the computer was turned off during the storm (or at least i trust that she wasnt using it and is telling me the truth) and i was wondering if it is possible for the port to get fried?

Nothing else on my motherboard seems to have been affected as the computer runs just fine, except that the port no longer works. i've since moved and gotten a different cable provider (plus different actual ethernet cable) and it still isnt working. i know the cable works because i plug it into my laptop and it runs just fine.

i ordered a new ethernet card and am going to put that in and try with that, but i just wanted to know if i'm wasting my time with that or if thats a viable solution? if this doesn't fix the problem, what can i do? i don't really want to replace my motherboard as a) its pretty new and b) its the only thing not working on the motherboard. i assume this is the problem since everything else works fine.

Since you got a new PCI card, it should work fine for you. I guess you could trouble shoot the port a little more like, what color does the light turn when you have a active connection plugged in (green, orange, red, none) and then we could go from there.. But you are saving a lot of time and trouble shooting by getting a new PCI card. Its up to you, if you want to make sure its really dead, i don't mind walking you through a few steps that i know. Also, Make sure that you look in device manager and see if the hardware is disconnected or anything.
