I need modeling/skinning help!!

First off, im a complete newb, but this area of gamning seems cool and id liek to check it out. What programs would i need (specifically HL modeling)what exactly is modeling/skinning. Anyone experienced modelers have any starting tips? Is it REALLY hard?

but, milkshape, from wut i hear, is the best for modeling, i could b wrong, sicne i dont model.
