so what does everyone think about this crap with N.Korea. Being in the Navy i think if we get into this with them we are so screwed unless Russia joins in.

I disagree.. we are screwed if the chinese come in on their side.. if not, then they are isolated and don't have a chance..
the chinese are really wanting a change also..but, they want the change to be orderly. If an invasion were to happen, a good percentage of the civilian population would haul their ass's up to china to get away from the war.. the worst possible scenario for china..
even the japanese are re-thinking their constitution in regards to korea. .they view them as an entity that is/has become a serious threat to their security and welfare. their constitution prohibits offensive military operations. hell, their army, air force and navy are called "japanese self-defense forces".. the worst scenario here, is if the japanese get involved.. too many simmering jealousies and memories from wwii still in the area. it would be like israel attacking iran.
the best solution is for the chinese to stop sending food, oil, power and money into north korea. they would either change or starve..
edit: And yes, i have been to korea. i did a few weeks exchange duty up on the dmz back in the 70's.. it was a freaking war up there then. And yes, i know how hard the north would fight.. but, so would the southern forces.. i have operated with the south korean marines, and lemme tell ya, they are some tough mofos..

well since the majority of n.korea's military is army, all we have to do is bomb them from air and sea. As long as we dont send in the army, we should be good IMO.

It's clear that the government cares nothing about the people, and they're working on ways to harm others. That in itself is the worst case scenario, and it's awful that the Chinese are sending food for the Koreans, when their government is just making more death machines. That is a good point about the Japanese, however. They have been at it since feudal times, I really don't see the hostilities being anywhere lessend over the years.
In all, it's going to be another big, big mess.

Personally, I think we are fucked if the chonger desides to invade.
They have the largets SOF in the world. So basicly they are gonna open up a 2nd front and pinch our forces. They also have a shit ton of arty all setup and ready to shell the fuck out of us.
Their airforce is shit.
Same with their navy.
But their sheer amount of troops/sof is quite impressive, and they will definatly take south koreas capitol, if not most of pie, before we can get enough people on the ground to counter attack.
I definatly would not like to be sitting on the DMZ.

These 2 reasons are why I'm not too worried about north korea. An army on a peninsula with no air superiority and ships firing down on them and you have another bay of pigs style invasion. I don't care how many people they have.

Anyways, I just think it's sad that they have starving, malnourished people and yet their leader can afford to spend $ try to make nuclear weapons and ICBMs :(

precisely.. this clown (their leader) is playing a game of brinksmanship that may wind up in a war.. he is gambling on the nuclear edge to force a resolution that he will find in his favor.. i think he is in for a rude awakening..

I personally love the spin for the food donations that N. Korea gets, they tell their people its "Tribute" to the leader.
Russia doesn't want anything to do with this.
China is its version of Mexico except the N. Koreans are crossing their border primarily to get food not jobs.
Japan should just keep out of it, that whole region is still sore over WWII.
The only card that the N. Koreans can play is a massive suicide mission across the DMZ. This isn't much of an option because their POS T-72s will just get chewed up by anti-tank missles, run out of gas, or starve to death in the freakin tank. However, invading would just be pointless and a wreck for the S. Koreans.
Why are we still over there anyways after 50 years? All the good electronics are made in Taiwan. Crap, I think I am turning into an isolationist.

Our presence in South Korea is a remnant of the territorial grab after WWII, the Cold War, and the 1950s Korean War.
If N. Korea attacks, they would get slaughtered. However, there would be an insane amount of civilian deaths in S. Korea that would probably dwarf the deaths in 9/11.

isn't this the case for all countries with nukes? defense is a lot higher on the list of priorities compared to making sure everyone has food.

Economic stability with South Korea and Japan? A presence near China?

I guess so long as the international community supplies food aid, NK can continue to spend $ on nuke programs. Oh well.

I think he means that having a presence over there is an opportunity to keep china from completely dominating the far east (which it comes close to doing and may happen anyway, eventually)

I'm not saying that it's a good or bad thing. Economic stability in that region benefits all parties in some way, though.

Regarding China, we still keep tabs over there as evidenced by our recently captured spy plane.
