A/D Gathers

hi folks,

for those of you who have nothing to do with the CTF world.. i'm Doc, and all i play is CTF (lol). anyway, i recently became a gather admin -> #tfc.gather.us if you dont know about it. and, i was happening to notice the lack of Attack/Defend gathers going on (i guess because it requires a lot of people).

anyway, the whole reason i became an admin was to make the community fun with some organized play. and, even though i don't play ADL, i wanted to offer you guys the opportunity to have some Attack/Defend ONLY gathers.

so, the reason i'm posting is to
a: find out of that's something you're interested in.
b: find out what night would be a good night to do that on (or nights, if there's enough interest.... currently wednesday night is probably the best for me)
c: what nights do you people play anyway? lol

i have a boat load of maps on my own server. so chances are if you play it i've got it... let me know if this is something you guys want. i'd be willing guarantee 2-3 A/D gathers 1 night a week if you folks want.

#adlpickup is our pickup channel.

We have matches Sunday (9v9) and Wednesday (5v5, suspended currently) nights at 9:00pm EST.

I'd definitely idle the main gather channel if you helped bring this into reality. Maps would most likely be avanti, cornfield, palermo, cmhf, pdh_r, asti_r, and ksour, among others.

lol i said "you people" because lately i seem to have run across a lot of folks who only play ADL.... so it just felt like there was this whole different community floating out there haha.

it's cool you guys have your own pickup chan.. i'll drop in. but if the wednesday thing has been suspended because there's no one to run it i'll be glad to pitch in with the gather stuff

That'd be great, especially since our 5v5 has been postponed. Evenings seem to be the best, and as for maps, it's almost always best to play avanti-style maps, unless of course there's a large majority singing for a DB-style map.

A/D Avanti-style staples:
ksour, cornfield, avanti, cmhf

You can pretty easily run a decent game with as little as 5v5, but still end up being even with as many as an 8v8.

I'd say last alternatives that end up coming into play once in a while would be respite and thecove.

Of course, the map of the week for the Sunday night 8v8 league is always a popular one as well.

--before i star this, this is in no way, shape, form, or fashion a bash, this is the harsh reality of one of the few gather admins who got picked up SPECIFICLALY to be a gather admin--

Now lemme tell you, as one of the first admins of the gather channel, a member of invade defend because of the gather channel, and an active member of the community.

You know why there's an adlpickup channel? It was an escape from the idpickup channel. The reason why the idpickup channel thrived for a while was because the gather network (read, the gather community) as a whole could not see eye to eye with the a/d community.

Now, if you were to try to make some big movement to revert the gather channel back to it's original purpose, you might be able to pull something small like this off. But it wont happen.

It is engraved into the gather community's head that #tfc.gather.us is "for ctf gathers, and only for ctf gathers." Granted, you ask ask chip dyn or fivestar, even though that's not the original nor intended purpose of the gather channel, that's what it is, and i know from the personal experience of being a gather admin that nothing you do will change that.

If you feel like putting up with the people who play constantly whining that you're not playing their favorite map, and on top of not playing their map, you're not playing a ctf map, feel free to try. And even then, good luck getting the few a/ders who are still in the gather channel who are willing to play a/d maps with ctfers with what they consider a jacked up config.

all in all, if you feel like trying, i'll say good luck, but even though i'd love to see the gather channel start a/d gathers, there's a reason why klob, commander, palagi and i arent admins in the gather channel, and there's a reason why i've turned down numerous offers to get my admin back.

well... i never had the intention of starting a gather revolution or anything. my main concern was for the ADL community. i know that i have a lot of fun playing CTF gathers and just assumed those folks would have as much fun playing A/D gathers...

certainly wasn't aware of all the history heh :) if you guys have something already in the works i say go for it. do whatever you gotta do to have fun - i just didn't want anyone left out.

its kind of hard to gather on dustbowl style maps

yeah, thats a big probelm with ADL maps, especailly dustbowl style. People usually leave after one side caps all three thinking its over. So then you are stuck finding 6 subs on sandbowl_r2 and people have no clue wtf to do.

It's also a 1 hour ordeal. Lotta times ppl just want their 25 minute fix. Avanti-style wins in that both teams get a chane to play o and d.
