Hi folks,

well i've been a gather admin for about 3 weeks now (2.5, something like that), and i'm really enjoying it. however, i think this type of format really has the potential to be something other than 2v/3v/4v CTF all the time. granted, that's the most popular style of play (and my personal favorite, i love ctf), but i still think that there must be a gap that can be filled that allows more people to utilize gathers for some organized play that's still fun.

so, i'm posting here for ideas. what i'm looking to do is dedicate a day or night of the week (probably... wednesday or a weekend day/night) to do something *different* (i.e. not just 4v4 monkey/schtop/baked)

i made an attempt to offer some A/D gathers, without realizing there's already a whole channel dedicated to that. so my next turn is to go to the community...

what would you guys like to see? i personally like playing 4v4 on maps i've never seen before, or that are played in eu/au leagues & whatnot. i also think it would be neat to pull together some CP or Run-style gathers (that's completely personal though).

anyway what do you guys want? i realize this game has little life, so i'm not looking to revive anything, but rather to offer something different and keep things fun.... sort of in the spirit of FNF or SNSF days - just a fun thing that at least a small group of people can get together and do.

let's actually make something fun & organized happen for once... give me some feedback. there's at least 200+ people in the #tfc.gather.us chan at any given point, there's got to be SOMETHING you people want to do, because i know not all of you participate in the gathers that are currently being run :)

You might as well break down into the FNF format and just call for a 9v9 pickup and the teams will organize themselves into positions and play a normal CTF map. If you do that, you'll have to set a regular time.

no i didn't say i was wanting to remake FNF/SNSF :O ....i guess the point of my mentioning it was it was a time where people could play at a set time each week, and do something that was competitive... was fun... and didn't "count"

- currently gathers are started "whenever" - there's no schedule. therefore you're bound to have people always wondering when the next one is going to happen.
- 99% of the gathers happening are on the same 6-7 maps
- it's next to impossible to get together an 8v8/9v9 format with gathers. there's either not enough people online, everyone is already in a 4v4, or everyone WANTS to be in a 4v4. that's not to say that whatever i do can't be 8v8 or 9v9, but that means there would have to be a LOT of interest, and therefore probably something a little different than what's being done/has been done (i.e. i don't want to steal a pre-existing format like FNF/SNSF)

so the real question is what can be done that's slightly outside the box, but still utilizes a very effective format (gathers)? see just remaking FNF/SNSF won't work... because it was obviously time for those things to pass on. if the creators of those would like to remake it, great, but i don't see it as being a success.

anyway, good feedback.... but just seems too cookie-cutter for what i want to do.

Well, I think you should do something like FNF. I distinctly remember something fun the community did maybe once or twice, which teams were picked of some sort and a dice was rolled to pick what class the match or game would be played with... ours was pyro and it was rediculously fun.. Something like that should be done

if you dont want to see it don't read it.
and i really could care less about !topadmin.... even if i did there's no way i could beat crz` :O i'm just looking to liven things up a bit

i kinda like your idea beano.... just a completely random way of playing the game. it actually might be neat to just make everyone select "random" as their class, that way your defense/offense is constantly shifting haha.

anyway, your idea might be a little easier to control.... everyone playing random class might get newbish very soon.

i'll have to chew on that one :]

well it was awesome when i did it... its like FNF except you, the admin would roll the die to pick the class, and like if it is ctf scouts 9v and shit.. so fun

i beat crz once.

and ive tried doing highlander gathers but those dont work out.

the longer i was a admin i started to see that people would rather do 4v's then 8v 9v. i also noticed they were picking the same maps (the admins) so all of my gathers have always been by votes.

but u could give highlander a try. in my experece it didnt work out well for me, and its really hard to track 16-18 players =\

I've always found that anything other than the norm (and that includes playing anything other than the 4 or 5 map rotation we usually play) requires you to get a decent bunch of people who you know. Most people will whine as soon as you mention you might not be playing schtop, openfire or monkey (french and spaniards are the worst!)

You'll know who the decent regulars are, just try to get something going when a bunch of them are around. Smart people realise that doing something different for one game isn't going to kill them, and it might even be fun.

This problem is something I have struggled with for the last 3 years or so since I've been running/adminning our chan, even when TFC wasn't so dead.
