View Full Version : TF2 article in CGW - Oct 2006

Would you believe that they even mentioned "Sharking" in TF2.
Wouldn't even think they'd know what it was...

CGW: Can you comment on essentials—
classic elements such as concussion jumping?

CB: They’re intact. And, in fact, we’re even
seeing new ones. “Sharking,” or so I’m told,
involves moving so swiftly as a Scout that
you can actually skip across water without
sinking.

RW: Team Fortress is all about that, I think.
Its core—players making a choice about how
they want to play, whether that’s, “I want to be
about mobility, dodging, and mincing through
defenses” or something else. We’re going to
keep that. Multiplayer games are, in some
cases, inherently humorous. Put 20 people
together and give them all guns and try telling
them to stay serious; it doesn’t work that way.
No matter how serious a shooter wants to be,
it’ll have moments that make you laugh a lot.
Instead of trying to fight it, Team Fortress 2
takes hold of it.

Thought this was interesting also:

CGW: Perhaps some serious shockers for
the purists?

RW: They’ll be shocked ’cause it shipped!
[Laughs] The old TF community has come out of
the woodwork, suddenly sending us a ton of
e-mails saying, “We’ve got the clan back
together! We’re ready, man! Let’s go!” They’re
the people who have to pay for our product, and
we want to make sure it’s something that they
want to pay money for. So we invite them in, let
them play….

This is the type of article I like. However, I don't know what CGW is, but I'm assuming its a reputable source.

This is a great philosophy to have. Any game with this at its core can't be all bad.

FF just got F'd in the A.

From reading the class bios it appears that the pyro is still completely useless which is very lame.

Yeah, I'm actually very disappointed with this interview - all the class definitions seem to convey no differences at all from TFC (except the medic). Maybe they're just playing their cards close to the vest, maybe not. This one change to the medic, however, may actually change the game's class dynamic pretty drastically:

From reading the class bios it appears that the pyro is still completely useless which is very lame.
Speculation time: if the medic's emphasis will be very much support instead of actual offense, I can see the pyro stepping up to take on much of the role of the TFC medic - an offensive runner with survivability and the abilities to take down defenders and cause chaos. It all depends on how worthwhile the flamethrower is in TF2; if it does decent damage and really makes it difficult to defend, he'll do all right.

Honestly, who wants an overpowered or a balanced pyro? Being set on fire is the most damn annoying thing in TFC. Sure, its fun if you are the pyro setting people on fire. I kind of like it being that class everyone just fucks around with to have fun with.

everyone that wants to see more useful classes in the next incarnation of whatever fortress game..nothing says the pyro has to be annoying to be effective.

agreed, pyro could work out very well in some of the maps leagues get disgusted at (casbah..) especially if played swing offense style

Anyone after seeing the actual article:

Some interesting quotes:
CGW: Can you comment on essentials—
classic elements such as concussion jumping
CB: They’re intact. And, in fact, we’re even
seeing new ones. “Sharking,” or so I’m told,
involves moving so swiftly as a Scout that
you can actually skip across water without
sinking.
RW: Team Fortress is all about that, I think.
Its core—players making a choice about how

them to stay serious; it doesn’t work that way.
No matter how serious a shooter wants to be,
it’ll have moments that make you laugh a lot.
Instead of trying to fight it, Team Fortress 2
takes hold of it.

So they are adding movement quirks to the game, and have kept concing(funny seeing them think sharking is something new and not already in tfc)

CGW: Were TFC’s trick jumps intentional, too?
RW: Absolutely. Remember, Team Fortress came out of the Quake era: all rocket jumping, all the time.
Giving medics a concussion grenade that made them move faster and farther was definitely deliberate

CGW:Let's say we list ideas under consideration with the caveat that they're ideas under consideration...
RW: Instead of specific ideas, i'll offer a blanket statement. One thing we want is to make the things much more understandable. You've probably tried to introduce new players to TF-tried to explain exactly what's what, except explosions are going off, scouts are sprinting by, someone who looks like an ally suddenly turns into a spy and starts stabbing.
CB: Chaos.
RW: Yes. Team fortress is certainly chaotic, and we're not necessarily trying to lose that. But we are making it accessible. It's almost all in user-interface elements rather than about removing features.

CGW: Steam's friends function is working well. Will TF2 take it further and, say, separate players by skill?
RW: I think the short answer is "yes".

I'm not sure what that's really implying but nonetheless interesting.

There's also an article about fortress forever as part of the TF2 feature.

Not necessarily...did you read the FF article thats in the issue also? FF got advertised too and I think anybody that was interested in reading about TF2 probably read the part about FF also.

yeah, there was over half a page on how ff has these unique features that will help out gameplay and a ranking system, etc. ends with the valve guy saying it's totally cool because people will go to whatever game they feel plays better and they're aiming for different things.

either way i'm probably gonna play both :P

I think with all that they could have done with the models, they really make them look horrible. As if Disney/Pixar were in charge of making a cartoon version of a CTF game. I don't like how they destoryed the medic as an offense powerhouse and turned him instead into a "support" role. The soldier looks like a tard along with the sniper. You might as well leave the pyro and the sniper out of the game, at least for most maps because they won't matter too much as a whole.

I dunno. I guess with all the time they have had, I feel a little disappointed in the product.

Actually, it's quite hard to aim and hit someone with fire roaring in your face, obstructing your view.
