I know this has been done before, but I can't find it.

If you had your choice of maps that you want to be on a good pub server, what would they be?

cant always have just ctf maps, its nice to mix it up a bit

every pub server should have avanti in the rotation

something around there would be fun and interesting, but obviously not in that order ;)

I always liked less defensive maps on pubs, cause its a bitch to cap on 2fort when the other team has like 9 defense

i'd play avanti all day long if there was an avanti only server that didn't have 22 bots in it. oh and schtop, pitfall, and ukfootie

It's 2fort though kev... it's essential for that map to be on the rotation is and always be on the rotation :p

i agree with you. less defensive maps instead of maps with 2-3 defenders guarding one entrance. i always play offense in pubs so i like to keep it fun and that's why i posted the maps i did. they arn't all played often in pubs and a lot of them are spread out.

Maps like openfire, 2mesa3, shutdown2, are all pretty standard go-to's.

2fort is great but like all Valve maps runs the risk of having newbies wander in. Well owns but in the modern TFC age where nobody likes to play pub offense it might not play well. Avanti is a great map, extremely fun, and virtually immune to abuse, as well as a nice break from CTF.

I love CP maps (cz, cz2, pz, etc.) but they don't pub well because nobody wants to run flags.

Monkey is a great map if you can somehow avoid serious FD congestion. Either nazi admins or cr_sniper 1 could do it.

yeah i'm down for Command Point maps for sure. but like you said dg it just doesn't happen in pubs. Canalzon and cz2 are amazing maps. another map i forgot to mention that's really fun once in awhile is muderball.

P.S. greg, have you scoped out that new map coming up in STA called unearthed_r?? it's a new CP style map and from the looks of things it could be very fun like canalzon. ;)

I think it would be cool to see shutdown_l on a pub server. For some reason it never ends up in the leagues map rotations.

Do you mean the original Shutdown, Shutdown2, or a different version of one of those?

The map "Shutdown_l" is an actual map by itself. hallways are wider, ramp is a little smaller/more incline and i also think there is a breakable entrance window that is above the top ramp/spawn area. Makes another entrance into flagroom (connects with the catwalk opposite of the elvator catwalk in the flagroom)

i've seen this map in STA 5v5 couple years ago. wasn't a bad map.

shutdown_l is shutdown, shutdown2k3 is a remake of sd2 that I think Virus did.

And no I havn't checked out any new maps, some of the ones being suggested here I've never heard of, some might be cool I wouldn't even know.

yeah dg, unearthed_r is a pretty sweet looking new CP map i think you would appreciate it.

No there is a version called shutdown_l. It maybe a modified version of the original shutdown(never played it) but I'm not sure. Someone else might know the answer to that.

shutdown_l is a completely different map from shutdown2. the layout is entirely different and the only commonality the maps share is that there is a flag behind the lasers that you must "shutdown" to access. Shutdown_l is a horribly defensive map even when played 8v8. There is one extremely small choke point that simply gets continuously spammed the whole round. There is an alternate access to the lasers that rarely gets used. The map has potential, but there is copious wasted space and the layout is a bit strange.

Avanti, Openfire_l, Schtop, Dustbowl, Monkey_l, 2Fort

Does that sound reasonable? Should we have 2Fort or Advanti in there twice, to encourage more to join?

torch2 is a terrible pub map as is dustbowl. t2 = uncontrollable respawn spam, dustbowl = getting stuck dying in or spamming into a chokepoint for 15 minutes.

If you want to attract people by running a map twice make it openfire.

solid but i would replace dustbowl with ksour if you want a ad map

That makes sense, but I'm trying to keep some valve maps in the rotation, just to keep some non-clanners playing... It's a hard balance.

What a lot of people don't realize is that there is a difference between a good map and a good pub map. A good pub map has to be a good map to start with, and additionally:

1) Be fun to play offensively and defensively.
2) Have minimized potential for exploitative and/or abusive behavior.
3) Be known enough for most people to have it.
4) Not be something that people will get sick of.

A lot of you are suggesting maps that might be fun to play in matches or other organized formats, but pubs are a different animal. You put a map on a pub that people dont' want to play, for whatever reason, and it will empty out, and empty servers tend to stay empty.

I believe to run a successful pub you need the following maps:
Avanti, 2fort, Murderball, Well, Badlands, Dustbowl, Ukfootie (15 min duration), Ksour, Casbah.

I bet a server with those maps would do quite well. This is coming from someone who pubs much more then clan matches. I've been pubbing consistently for 5 years now. Be sure to have fast download speeds aswell. Also a good stats system i.e. "say /rank".
