Everything was working fine 2 days ago, have not changed anything, and now my desktop wont connect to the internet, even though it seems to be contacting the router OK. The desktop machine is working fine.

When I open a browser it says cannot find server and page not displayed. I try to log into MSN and it comes up with a trouble shooting window for the connection. When I run that troubleshooter and it says the "your gateway seems to be offline", and stops at item 2.

I've tried using an ethernet cable to the router from a laptop and it seemed to work fine.

Help me please!!!!

check a couple things...
run -> cmd
ipconfig
-> check your default gateway (your router) ip address.
try to ping it
ping -> 198.162.0.1 or whatever
-> check your ip address, if it is 169.x.x.x then it is a windows default ip, and your not getting one from your router.
-> try to renew your ip address: ipconfig /release
and then ipconfig /renew

try to ping your router again; if that works, try to ping google or something (ping www.google.ca)

also try plugging directly into the modem (passing the router).

excellent walkthrough wonderboy.
