Intel will deliver the company's first quad-core processors for high-performance PCs and servers Relevant Products/Services from Dell in November
Intel officials already have indicated that chips with dozens of cores might be possible by the end of this decade. The company hinted that, 10 years down the line, chips with hundreds of cores might be possible.
AMD already has demonstrated a working "4-by-4" quad-core platform aimed at serious gamers. That platform is reportedly powerful enough to simultaneously play games, record videos, and encode MP3s without suffering a performance hit.
For those of you that didn't see this already, I thought this might interest you. Furthermore, I find it amusing that this is on pace with some of the predictions set forth in "The Singularity is Near" by Ray Kurzweil.
For those of you that haven't read it, he predicts the coming of super intellegent machines, true AI, and a lot of other futuristic stuff to be fully immersed in our society before 2050. This is all based on the fact that several key fields of technology are advancing at expodental rates and even these rates are growing expodentally at times. There are ofcourse several hurrdles to overcome, but I look around today and I think, "so far so good." :)
