Since when does the 1st Amendment give ANYONE the right to disrupt anything. I have been watching the news. Those nuts with that Baptist chuch in Topeka KS wanted to go protest at the funeral of those Amish kids that were murdered. Additionally, the founder of the Minutemen organization was speaking at Columbia and the protest was out of control. Since when does the ability of some people to be very loud and obnoxious give them the right to disrupt speeches, funerals, etc. In fact, this sounds more of a violation of the 1st Amendment than telling the people that they arent allowed to protest in that spot in the first place. By protesting in the funeral, or at the speech, they drown out the words of the people who are trying to be heard. This is not very fair.

From what I've heard, local police departments charge massive amounts of money to Jim Phelps and his whackos to provide "adequate police protection" for their protests. So it's a small victory I guess. I just wish one day the police wouldn't show up and the protesters get savagely beaten by a few people who don't really care all that much about lawsuits.

You know who I'm talking about.

I believe Bush is trying to make a law that states funeral protests (or at least military funeral) must be at least a certain distance from the funeral. Already, some states have made such laws (KS).

Edit: Apparently he signed the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act.

Maybe we should employ restrictions like we do with the 2nd amendment. We will allow freedom of speech, but first you have to register then have a background check and a 30 day waiting period before you can exercise it.

Interestingly enough, one of my relatives was a judge in Kansas who presided over a case where people were charged with exactly this (beating of Phelps supporters). His ruling was deemed too lenient by Phelps, and they protested at his funeral when he died two years ago - nearly 15 years after the incident occured. These people hold grudges.

The worst thing about this group is that they have trained lawyers so everything they do is by the book. It's taken new laws being passed to help stop some of their protests.

Did you read the article? the guy is sueing an SS agent. He might work for the vice president, but that's a far cry from being a politician.

It has very little to do with the thread save the guy thinking his First Amendment was infringed upon. Just a simple way for you to attack whoever you dislike, but poorly attempted.

if that's your definition of a derailment then this thread has already been derailed 3-4 times before I posted.

First reply, about funeral protests.
Second reply, about funeral protests.
Third reply, sarcastic solution to funeral protests.
Fourth reply, about funeral protests.
Fifth reply, blind argument about current adminstration posting irrelevant link to article that doesn't even have anything to do with politics which was trying to be argued in the first place.

And what do you mean by what article? The only one that's been posted. Maybe the one directly preceded my post? Maybe the one you posted, and the one I was responding to? Come on. Why do you even bother doing this? This is the Academy, not General or Cesspool forum.

yea, and look..someone brought up the 2nd amendment I stuck to the first! (not that I care)

blind argument? it looks pretty clear to me..current politicians have disdain for our rights. isn't that clear?

I thought you were talking about some article concerning the baptist church.
obviously I've read any article that I've posted.

if our politicians were champions of our rights like you claim then maybe they would've let the guy speak without arresting him? I can cite many other speech infringements..this just happened to be one of the more recent instances.
