I've checked and made sure it was enabled, i've checked the cable, but for some reason the computer just won't reconize any connection. It sits there with a cute lovely X saying its unplugged. I've tried hooking it up directly a high speed connection thats good, and i've tried link it to another computer with a crossover cable. Nothing works. Any suggestions? Its on a laptop if it matters.
Fucked up part about all this, is that it was working day before yesterday, someone else used the laptop and all of a sudden its not working.

Check the IP settings. (cpanel > Network connections > right click on local area connection > TCP/IP click properties ) and make sure that you are "obtaining ip address automatically"
I would also unplug the router for a little while and then plug it back in and see if the nic notices it come back on.

Yeah I had that set correctly and what it does is, Aquiring network ip blah blah blah, then it says not connect.

Er, maybe your ethernet port is fried? Get a PCMCIA 10/100 card for like $8 from Staples, pop it in and see what happens.

does your motherboard support two network jacks? make sure it is plugged in the right one.
Also, go to my computer -> system information -> hardware -> device manager and make sure that the ethernet card is showing up on there.
One last thing, look at the jack on the motherboard when the cable is plugged in if you see green/orange light flashing that means that it is receiving a connection.

I even tried restoring it to when it was working and still nothing. Yeah thats the only thing I can think of, is that it is fried. Thanks for the suggestion MeestarK. I tried an usb ethernet adapter and plugged in the cord and it worked like a charm. What i don't understand though is how a brand new laptop's NIC card after a week of use crapped out.

Have you looked at the port. I had a friend bring me his wifes "brand new laptop" because the network port just stopped working and I found a (just one) pin was bent and not getting a good connection. I got in there with a paperclip and fix it up.
No problems since.

never thought about that. i'll take a good look @ it tomrrow. Funny thing is though. Is the guy took it to best buy which is where he bought it. They said the NIC card was turned off. " an option i went through over 20 times at least ". Guy @ geek squad said it was fine after he turned it on. Guy went to go try it and guess what boys and girls ! Still doesn't work, go geek squad.

hilarious.. the poster boys of the 'paid too much for ineptitude' group..
there is a possibility that one of the visual basic routines for tcp/ip is ruined, or the actual tcp/ip stack is corrupted.. i found a handy little utility that rewrites these back to new.. winsockxpfix just google it up and download it.. this thing has saved me hundreds of hours of troubleshooting time.. before this, i would have to spend hours regediting and pouring over vb routines to fix things..

Hey ass, you stranger =D. Uhm, you know, I had no idea about what you just said being a possiblity. More so over, is it possible a brand new laptop's tcp/ip can be corupted?

hi bud..
and to answer your question, yes.. i found these stacks get corrupted big-time by virus's and even some spyware.. so, if you had any of them, it is a very big possibility that your stacks and vb routines could be corrupted.. many times in the past, we would just reformat and start over, since the fix (manually) was very time consuming.. this little routine, winsockxpfix works well on all versions of xp and win2k.. keep this little routine on a pocket flash drive and it will save you a lot of time if you troubleshoot networks/internet problems for a living..
