Anyone have any suggestions? I have something that is loud in my case. Taking out various parts has led me to believe it is the southbridge fan. I figure it can't be more than $10 to replace so I'm going to give it a shot. It needs to be low profile as my 7900GTX extends over it. newegg.com and xoxide.com seem to be lacking in southbridge fans. Any suggestions? Or places to look?

the best thing is to actually eyeball the part and make sure it will fit.. easiest way to do that is to go to your handy-dandy local computer store and check out the fans that they may have... even compusa has some on the shelf.. it's impossible to 'size things up' over the net and find one that for sure will fit. even for a guy that has fixed thousands of computers, it's tough.. take my advice, it will save you a lot of time and heartache..
i mean, bring it in for someone to look at that knows what they are doing.. they probably got a fan instock as a direct replacement.. i normally keep a pretty goos supply onhand in my shop because fans are the number1 reason for failures in computers. i stock stuff for the motherboard chipsets and even new fans for video cards.. any competent shop would do the same.. and, they should just pop the side, peer in and see what the deal is without a 'bench charge' too if they are good.. i do it all the time. it takes 2 mins, and they really shouldn't charge you for this, just 'peering under da hood'..

Pros: I purchased this fan to replace the cheap chipset fan on my MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, which had started making a terrible noise. On that mobo, the chipset is lined up with the PCI-e slot, so there were potential issues with fitting a cooling device under my video adapter. Fortunately, this fan fit perfectly, both in terms of vertical fit, and in terms of alignment over the chipset. It runs much quieter than the original fan, too.
Looks like a decent deal.... I just had to replace my fan on my DFI Ultra D. You won't find anything on newegg if you go looking for "southbridge fans." They are VGA coolers. Google your board and the word "fan" and you will easily find what everyone is using as replacement parts.

I've had so many of those die..I think the next motherboard I get I'm just going to take them off and put in HQ ones.

got to thinking about this.. on my personal computers, i replace the fan with a big heatsink.. i got my hands on a few and never had a problem with overheating.. (really hate to give out one of my trade secrets here, but i figured what the hell).. too many of these fans get gooped up and croak on customers, so if you can just replace them with an appropriate heat sink, then i would do it..
ack, i hate giving out some of these tips, but for gamers, ok..

Yeah, I usually have to replace that thing every year or so. I haven't found a heatsink to fit mine stock that I don't have to grind yet. That's the bad thing about the pci-e cards for DFI boards...

ack, i hate giving out some of these tips, but for gamers, ok..lol. not only is that not a secret; even if it was.. what affect would it have on your business by giving it to someone over the internet that is geographically no where near you?
sound advice, though.

I think he meant its more of a secret to someone who has never built a pc. There really are no secrets to those of us active in pc hardware forums, lol.

thanks doc. you are the only one that really answered my question. i was simply looking for the "wrong" part.
i understand you have to assume that people are idiots when giving tech support, but my question was "where do i get a southbridge fan."
not trying to flame, i appreciate you taking the time to respond. just a little patronizing.
