View Full Version : Plasma TV's

Plasmas finally came down to a price where I consider them affordable. I'm in the market for a 40-42" Plasma but my knowledge on Plasmas is pretty small. I know for sure I want an HD Plasma TV (not ED). What are the reputable names? Most of the online "Plasma" guides are pretty outdated, when I go into a retail store I have a feeling the scene has changed quite a bit. I'm a little reluctant to buy something at a local retail chain cause I never feel like I'm buying something for the price it should be.
Anyone have knowledge in this area and care to help me out a bit? What are the brands to stay away from, what are the brands to look for? What is the life span? Does it look good if you hook your computer up to it? If anyone knows of some particularly great buys, I'd really appreciate the guidance.

I would actually get a DLP screen instead of plasma. They last longer, are still fairly light weight, cheaper, and offer excellent picture quality. Also they won't allow burn-in (afaik).

Pssh...Plasma sucks. LCD Sucks. DLP is good. BUT! Laser, once it makes it to North America, will whipe the floor with them all. Laser TV FTW kthx (http://www.smh.com.au/news/home-theatre/laser-tv-here-comes-the-plasma-killer/2006/10/11/1160246198806.html)
If you want a TV now though...get a DLP. Plasmas burn-in to easily.

Actually SED will whipe the floor with them too, but I think he wants one now.
I would go with a Panasonic as they have the best reviews everywhere I have seen them, and they look awesome. I would also spend a little time reading here: http://www.highdefforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38&page=2&order=desc
You'll get a much more educated answer rather than... this sucks or that sucks.

My issue with projector screens is mostly space. I'm fitting this into my one bedroom apartment, so something wall mountable is preferred.
I had been leaning away from LCD TV's previously, but now perhaps I should rethink that a bit. It looks like in the smaller sizes LCD's are just as good, although typically when I see an LCD up against a Plasma the plasma looks noticeably clearer. But I can't deal with burn in issues since I will be hooking up my computer from time to time.
Thanks for the links though, I have plenty to research now! Really appreciate it.

danger I'll tell you what I tell everyone
Contact me in IRC: CHIPMAN|AFK in #tfc.gather.us
or drop me a forum pm (though I prefer IRC, will be on late 2nite or sometime 2morrow)
I sell TV's (when I'm not in school), and know quite a bit about them, from how the technology works, to pros and cons of specific brands/models, to customer opinion/reviews.
I can't see me making any money off you for doing this, so you can be sure I'm not trying to rip you off :)
