games running "windowed"

Well for some reason the last two games i've tried to install (doom3 and starcraft: brood war) have run correctly, but the screen they are shown in shrinks to a 640x480 size window, I've tried updating my directx, I have current gpu drivers and all the such but I cant seem to get it to run fullscreen (it ends up running in the smaller window centered in my monitor, and everytyhing outside the game screen is just black)

any suggestions?

have you tried changing the in-game resolution to that of your monitor?

also, right click on the shortcut and make sure that "run in windowed mode" isn't ticked.

mm yeah I tried all that stuff

(add q1 rocket arena to that list)
looked through properties and all that

its not that its running in a window really, its just that the gameplay screen is shrunk really small, and the rest of monitor is just black

well I havent fixed it but I found another problem (cause?)

whenever I try to change the resolution of my screen, it doesnt do anything but shrink the size of my viewable area and put up a black border outside that (which was essentially what was happeneing with the games at my normal resolution)

On the thinkpads we have here, whenever we encounter this problem, we just load default configuration in BIOS and it fixes it.

something to do with how nvidia updates the 6000 series of video cards
I went and downloaded a slightly older one off of omega drivers
and it seems to have fixed the problem
